Effect: Reads the 16 possible digital inputs of the PMX device and
returns the binary state of each input as integer value
between 0 and 65535. The lower 8 bits represent the 8 inputs
of the first PX878. The higher 8 bits represent the 8 inputs of
the second PX878.
