2 Initial startup

2.1 Electrical connection

WARNING
WARNING
Caution: Mains voltage present! Before connecting the electric diamond core
drilling machine, check whether the voltage given on the rating plate corresponds
to the mains voltage. Only use sockets/extension leads with a functioning
protected earth contact. The function of the PRCD fault current circuit breaker
(19)) must be checked every time before start-up:
1. Plug the mains plug into the socket.
2. Press the RESET button (17), the PRCD control lamp (16) lights red
(operating state).
3. Pull out the mains plug, the PRCD control lamp (16) must go out.
4. Plug the mains plug back into the socket.
5. Press the RESET button (17), the PRCD control lamp (16) lights red
(operating state).
6. Press the TEST button (18), the PRCD control lamp (16) must go out.
7. Press the RESET button (17) again, the PRCD control lamp (16) lights red.
The electric diamond core drilling machine is ready for operation.
WARNING
WARNING
If the described functions of the PRCD fault current circuit breaker (19) are not
fulfi lled, the device may not be used. There is a danger of electric shock. The
PRCD fault current circuit breaker tests the connected device, not the installa-
tion before the socket nor interconnected extension leads or cable reels.
REMS Picus DP is delivered without a PRCD fault current circuit breaker and
is suitable for dry drilling only. Wet drilling with, as well as connection of a water
hose to the REMS Picus DP is not permitted. There is a danger of electric
shock.
On building sites, in a wet environment, indoors and outdoors or under similar
installation conditions, only operate the electric diamond core drilling machine
on the mains with a fault current protected switch (FI breaker) which interrupts
the power supply as soon as the leakage current to earth exceeds 30 mA for
200 ms. When using an extension lead, a cable cross section suitable for the
power of the electric diamond core drilling machine must be chosen.
2.2 REMS Picus drive units
The REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3.5 and REMS Picus
SR drive units are universally applicable for dry or wet drilling, hand-held (REMS
Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR) or with a drill stand. The
combined drilling crown connection of the drive spindle (11) of REMS Picus
S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR allows both the direct mounting of
universal diamond core drilling crowns with UNC 1¼ female thread and with
G ½ male thread. The REMS Picus S1, REMS Picus S3 and REMS Picus SR
drive units are not delivered with the water supply system (15) pre-assembled
but loose. The adapter for the water connection on the Picus S1, Picus S3 and
Picus SR drive machines is closed by a cover (14). In this condition the drive
machines (Picus S1, Picus S3 and Picus SR) are used for dry drilling. The
water feed device is already pre-assembled on the REMS Picus S2/3,5. For
wet drilling, see 2.5.
The REMS Picus DP drive unit with micro-pulse technology that can be switched
on and off is used especially for dry drilling, hand held or with a drill stand. The
combined drive spindle (11) of REMS Picus DP allows both direct mounting of
the dry diamond core drilling crowns with UNC 1¼ female thread and the tapping
tool with G ½" male thread and has an integrated suction rotor for dust extrac-
tion with a connection for REMS Pull M and other suitable vacuum cleaners.
NOTICE
NOTICE
The G ½" connection thread in the drive spindle (11) of REMS Picus DP may
not be closed for drilling with, for example, a core drilling crown, an adapter or
similar because this bore is intended for dust extraction.
The drive-unit turning speed required for cost-effective core drilling depends
on the diameter of the diamond core drilling crown. Select the turning speed
of the drive unit in such a way that the peripheral speed (cutting speed) of the
diamond core drilling crown runs within a range between 2 and 4 m/s. It is of
course possible to carry out drilling operations outside this optimum range,
albeit subject to reductions in the operating speed and/or service life of the
diamond core drilling crown. Higher peripheral speed apply in masonry.
The turning speed of the REMS Picus S1 is adjusted to a fi xed setting. From
a drilling diameter of 62 mm, the REMS Picus S1 operates in concrete in the
optimum peripheral speed range, which always remains inside acceptable limits
when smaller diameters are being handled. The attachment method used with
the diamond-tipped segments of the REMS Universal diamond core drilling
crown has been modifi ed so that smaller diameters can also be drilled effi ciently
with the REMS Picus S1.
The turning speed of the REMS Picus S3 can be selected by means of a three-
speed stepped drive to ensure that in concrete it always operates within the
optimum drilling speed range. The correct speed can be taken from the machine
rating plate (Fig. 7) of the REMS Picus S3. The fi rst column of the table shown
there covers speeds 1 to 3, the second column shows the corresponding turning
speeds, the third column the core bit diameters for masonry and the fourth
column contains core bit diameters for steel-reinforced concrete. It shows, for
example, that a Ø 102 mm core-drilling operation in masonry should be carried
out in third speed, while drilling into steel-reinforced concrete requires the use
of fi rst speed.
The turning speed of REMS Picus S2/3,5 can be selected by a 2-step switching
gear so that it always drills in an optimum area. The right gear can be read
from the rating plate (Fig. 8) of REMS Picus S2/3,5. The table there shows
gears 1 and 2 in the fi rst column and the corresponding speeds in the second
column and the drill crown diameters for masonry and steel-reinforced concrete
in the third column.
The rotation of the REMS Picus SR can be selected via a 2-gear stepped drive
in combination with a stepless electronic speed regulation to ensure that it always
operates within the optimum drilling range. The correct speed can be taken from
the table (Fig. 9). The correct gear step is selected at the handle grip (39), the
correct rotation via the electronic speed regulation at the dial (57). The electronic
speed regulation keeps the selected speed largely constant also under load.
The turning speed of REMS Picus DP is adjusted to a fi xed setting. The
diamond-tipped segments of the REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns TDKB
LS are specially designed for dry drilling in concrete/steel-reinforced concrete,
masonry and other materials using the micro-pulse technology with REMS
Picus DP without water.
WARNING
WARNING
Wait for the machine to come to a halt before engaging the transmission!
Never try to do this during operation or outfl ow. Pull out the mains plug if a gear
cannot be switched! At the same time, turn the switch handle (39) and move
the drive spindle/diamond core drilling crown by hand.
2.3 REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns UDKB, inductively soldered
and resolderable.
REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns UDKB LS, laser-welded
and high temperature resistant.
REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns are developed especially for
common drilling operations. The connection thread of the REMS universal
diamond core drilling crowns UNC 1¼ is compatible with REMS Picus S1,
REMS Picus S3, REMS Picus S2/3.5 and REMS Picus SR and suitable drive
units from other suppliers. If the connection thread of the drive unit proves to
be incompatible, adapters are available as accessories (22).
REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns TDKB LS, laser-welded and high
temperature resistant.
The REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns TDKB LS are designed especially
for dry drilling,hand-held or with a drill stand, for core drilling machines with
micro-pulse technology, e.g. REMS Picus DP and suitable drive units from other
suppliers. The connection thread of the REMS dry diamond core drilling crowns
UNC 1¼ is compatible with REMS Picus DP and suitable drive units of other
suppliers. If the connection thread of the drive unit proves to be incompatible,
adapters are available as accessories (22).
The cutting characteristics of the diamond core drilling crown are determined
by the quality of the diamonds, the particle-size and shape of the diamonds,
and also by the bonding agent – the metal powder in which the diamond parti-
cles are set. Users who need to carry out a variety of core-drilling operations
should keep a range of diamond core drilling crowns of different sizes to hand
in order to optimise the cutting process. It is often only possible to check on
site which diamond core drilling crown is best suitable for a drilling operation
with regard to cutting performance (operating speed) and useful life. You may
even have to contact the manufacturer of the diamond core drilling crown on
various occa sions in order to fi nd out which bit should be used.
NOTICE
NOTICE
REMS universal diamond core drilling crowns UDKB and UDKB LS are not
suitable for using with REMS Picus DP with micro-pulse technology to drill core
holes.
NOTICE
NOTICE
When performing dry drilling with REMS TDKB LS dry diamond core drilling
crowns and the REMS Picus DP core drilling machine with micro-pulse tech-
nology, it is necessary to extract the health hazardous drilling dusts from the
drilling gap with a suitable safety vacuum cleaner of dust class M, e.g. REMS
Pull M. Observe the national regulations.
2.3.1 Fitting the diamond core drilling crown
WARNING
WARNING
Unplug from the mains power supply! Screw the selected diamond core
drilling crown onto the drive spindle (11) of the drive unit, and lightly hand-tighten.
It is an advantage to insert the quick-release ring ((54) accessory art. no.
180015) between the diamond core drill crown and the drive spindle. Firm
tightening with an open-ended wrench is not necessary. Note that the threads
on the drive spindle and diamond core drilling crown must be clean.
2.3.2 Removing the diamond core drilling crown
WARNING
WARNING
Unplug from the mains power supply! Use an SW 32 wrench to hold the
drive spindle (11) and an SW 41 wrench to loosen the diamond core drilling
crown (48).
Always unscrew the diamond core drilling crown from the drive unit when the
drilling task is fi nished. With wet-drilling operations in particular, there is also
a danger of the diamond core drilling crown becoming corroded, making it
diffi cult to remove.
