1. Principles for testing power-operated gates
The safety-related requirements and test procedures for the construction and
equipment of power-operated gates have been specified in the European standards,
which furnish the specific details of the general requirements of the European Ma-
chinery Directive.
In particular, these include:
• DIN EN 12604 Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates; mechanical
aspects; requirements,
• DIN EN 12605 Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates; mechanical
aspects; test methods,
• DIN EN 12453 Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates; safety in use
of power-operated doors; requirements,
• DIN EN 12445 Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates; safety in use
of power-operated doors; test methods,
• DIN EN 12635 Industrial, commercial and garage doors and gates; installation
and use,
According to BGR 232, section 6, power-operated doors and gates must be tested by
a competent person before it is put into operation for the first time and as needed,
but at least once a year. This testing is not equivalent to maintenance. A competent
person is one who, based on his technical education and experience, has adequate
knowledge in the field of power-operated gates and is conversant with relevant na-
tional regulations on occupational safety, accident prevention and general best engi-
neering practices (e.g. BG regulations, DIN standards and VDE provisions) to such an
extent that he can assess the safe condition of such gates and doors. Such persons
include, e.g. experts, manufacturer's specialists, companies providing delivery and
assembly services or specialists of the operating agency having relevant experience.
Professional experts need to issue their assessment from the viewpoint of occupa-
tional safety, without being influenced by other, for example, economical circum-
stances. The outcome of the testing must be recorded in writing. The written certifi-
cate should be kept ready at hand at the place where the power-operated gates are
being operated for inspection. National requirements of the installation and testing
must also be observed and followed!
