Adjusting
tension
The correct tension is an important factor becausetoo little tension or
too
much
tension
will
pucker. Make atest on a sampleof cloth and thread that you intend to
use.
A perfect, well-balanced stitch (illustration I) will have locksbetween
the two layers of fabric with no loops on top or bottom and no
puckering.
Forstraight stitching
To reduce tension, turn the dial to a lower number. Little tension will
produce a loose stitch (illustration 2), with loops in your seam. To
increasetension, turn the dial to a higher number. Too much tension
will causethe fabricto pucker(illustration3).
Forzigzag stitching
The correct tension settingwill produce smooth andeven stitcheswith
the needle and bobbin threads lockingthe ends of the zigzagstitches
(illustration 4).
Too much tension wilt produce a tight stitch, which will causethe cloth
to pucker. To loosen tension turn dial to a lower number. Too little
tension will produce a loose stitch. Tighten tension by turning dial to a
higher number.
