Tips for handling snaking
– If the vehicle-trailer combination
starts snaking, carefully take your
foot off the accelerator pedal and
counter-steer gently.
Do not make any hectic or sudden
steering motions.
Pull over as soon as the vehicle and
trailer have stabilised. The most fre-
quent causes of snaking are, apart
from incorrect driving behaviour and
excessive speed, incorrect load distri-
bution or insufficient support load. For
this reason, please ensure correct
load distribution, support load and se-
curing of the load.
One further cause of trailer snaking
could be the tyre pressure being too
low. Therefore check the tyre pres-
sure.

7.4 Brakes

The wheels can lock during full braking.
To brake the trailer, first brake gently so
the wheels do not lock. Then brake hard.
Inexperienced drivers should first prac-
tise braking without a load on suitable
terrain.
The braking distance of the trailer in-
creases as the load increases.
– Note that the ABS system in the tow-
ing vehicle does not control the over-
run mechanism of the trailer.
– Initiate braking manoeuvres early.

7.5 Reversing

– Have an experienced person teach
you how to reverse safely to ensure
you will not endanger other drivers.
– Make sure no one is between the
towing vehicle and the trailer while re-
versing.
– The persons guiding you must main-
tain a safe distance from the trailer
and must always be visible in the ex-
terior mirrors when the trailer is being
reversed.

7.6 Manoeuvring

The trailer is easier to manoeuvre if the
tyre pressure is not too low. If the trailer
is difficult to manoeuvre, check the tyre
pressure (See Tyre inflation pressure,
page 68).
