4.4 Breakaway cable for overrun
brake
You have the following two options for
securing the breakaway cable:
– Secure it to the eye or bore hole (A)
– Secure it to the trailer coupling (B)
NOTE
Breakaway cables are only installed on
braked trailers.
Risk of accidents
Triggering unintentional emergency
braking
The breakaway cable needs to have
enough slack so that unintentional
emergency braking does not occur in
tight corners.
NOTE
Each country has its own regulations for
securing the breakaway cable. Before
going on trips abroad, please find out
how the breakaway cable should be se-
cured. Automobile clubs and experts will
be able to help.
Operating Instructions
Böckmann recommends securing the
breakaway cable to the trailer coupling or
the towing vehicle body by means of an
eye or an existing bore hole. In some
countries, this method of securing the
breakaway cable is required by law when
you drive with a trailer.
If the towing vehicle does not have an
eye or a bore hole, you can fit the break-
away cable as a loop over the trailer cou-
pling for journeys in Germany.
NOTE
Secondary couplings are required in
some countries. Before going on trips
abroad, please find out whether you re-
quire a secondary coupling for your trail-
er. Automobile clubs and experts will be
able to help.
A Securing the breakaway cable to
an eye or bore hole
1. Thread the breakaway cable through
an eye or a bore hole on the trailer
coupling or the towing vehicle.
2. Lay the breakaway cable over the
trailer coupling.
3. Attach the spring hook to the breaka-
way cable.
4. Pull the loop tight so that the breaka-
way cable cannot bounce off the trail-
er coupling while you drive.
