• We describe below the precautions to be taken during each of the three phases in drilling :
➊ The start of drilling phase: during this phase, the drill advance into the rail must be slow and as steady as possible.
➋ The working phase: it is important in this phase to correctly control the speed of advance of the tool.
If the speed of advance is too high, the cutting edges of the drill may break. If, in contrast, the speed of advance is too slow, swarf will not be thick enough
and will not clear. Swarf then accumulates in the cutting edges and may block or damage the tool.
To check whether the advance speed is appropriate, observe the swarf:
- if it comes out in fragments (short, straw-like pieces of swarf), the speed of advance is too
- if they are long and continuous and wind around the tool to form a "nest", the advance speed is
Under normal conditions, 30 to 50 seconds are required to drill a hole (the drilling time varies with the speed of advance, the Ø of the drill, the degree of
drill wear, the hardness of the rail, etc.).
➌ Core ejection phase: on completion of drilling, the speed of advance must be maintained until the drilling core is ejected.
If required, inspect the drilling core to check that the advance speed was correct and the drill in good condition.
If the cylindrical section of the core is shiny, this indicates that the speed of advance was insufficient.
If the cylindrical section of the core appears to have a very light thread around its periphery, the advance speed was correct.
If the cylindrical section of the core is rough or uneven, or if the core jams in the tool, this means that the tool is deteriorating and will soon need to be
sharpened or replaced.
• To ensure the longevity of the equipment and that drilling takes place under good conditions, it is vital to check that swarf is not accumulating in the
advance mechanism.
This inspection must take place each time the machine is used, and in particular whenever it is placed on the rail during a sequence of consecutive drilling
operations.
If swarf has gathered around the drill, it must be removed with a hook but never with bare hands.
: As a precaution, always wear gloves (or rags) to avoid injury or burns to the hands.
The PR.2 rail drilling machine must be used under normal environmental conditions.
In the event of abnormal noise or resistance, immediately bring the spindle back (drill retracted) and stop the engine.
Inspect the tool (see § 3.3 "Fitting the drill"). Then correct the problem, referring to the instructions given above.
