2. Preparations for Use

2.1. Electrical connection
Before connecting the unit, check whether voltage on the rating plate matches
the mains voltage.
2.2. Inserting the quick-change die heads
Use only original quick-change die heads of REMS eva hand die stock. Up to
thread size 1¼" the quick-change die heads are inserted into the octagonal
seat of the drive unit (Fig. 2). They snap in automatically.
The die heads protude the back of the housing. This facilitates taking the die
head out of the drive unit by jolting the protuding edge against a plain surface
or edge (fig. 3).
Inserting the 1" quick-change die head in REMS Amigo E (Fig. 8)
The groove in the octagon of the 1" quick-change die head must be in line with
the locking pin (14) in the octagonal seat of the REMS Amigo E.
Inserting the quick-change die heads sizes 1½" and 2" in the REMS Amigo
2 and REMS Amigo 2 Compact drive units (Fig. 4)
Remove the retaining ring (11) with a suitable tool, e.g. screwdriver. Remove
the stop ring (12) and insert the 1½" or 2" (13) quick-change die head in its
place and remount the retaining ring (11) on the 1½" or 2" quick-change die
head.
WARNING
Do not work without a retaining ring (11)! There is otherwise
a danger of the die head being pushed out of the die head seat during start-
cutting.
2.3. Changing dies in the quick-change die head
1. Clamp the quick-change die head in the vice with the octagonal seat.
2. Remove countersunk screws (15) and cover (16).
3. Knock out the dies (17) carefully to the centre of the die head body.
4. Knock the die heads (17) with the start-cutting edge (A) towards the bottom
in corresponding slots to the extent that they do not protrude beyond the die
housing. The dies are numbered. Die 1 in slot 1, die 2 in slot 2, die 3 in slot 3
and die 4 in slot 4.
5. Fit the cover (16) and tighten the screws (15) lightly.
6. Carefully knock the dies (17) outwards with a soft pin (copper, brass or hard
wood) until they are in contact with the edge of the cover.
7. Tighten the countersunk screws (15).
If a thread is to be cut on a short length of laid pipe, the quick-change die heads
S of the REMS eva must be used with an additional pipe guidance (19) on the
cover side.
Changing dies in the quick-change die head S
8. Clamp the quick-change die head in the vice with the octagonal seat.
9. Remove countersunk screws (15) and cover (20) with guide sleeve (19).
10. Knock out the dies (17) carefully to the centre of the die head body.
11. Knock the die heads (17) with the start-cutting edge (A) towards the top in
corresponding slots to the extent that they do not protrude beyond the die
housing. The dies are numbered. Die 1 in slot 1, die 2 in slot 4, die 3 in slot 3
and die 4 in slot 2.
12. Fit the cover (20) with guide sleeve (19) and tighten the screws (15) lightly.
13. Carefully knock the dies (17) outwards with a soft pin (copper, brass or hard
wood) until they are in contact with the edge of the cover.
14. Tighten the countersunk screws (15).
2.4. Support bracket
The support bracket (2) serves to support the die stock against torque in both
directions, i. e. for advance and reverse rotation of the die head, for right and
left hand threads.
WARNING
Always use the support bracket!
Otherwise there is a danger of the unit being torn from the hand as the torque
increases and spinning round.
2.5. Dual purpose holder (Fig. 9)
For thread cutting and sawing, for REMS Amigo E, REMS Amigo, REMS Amigo
2, REMS Amigo 2 Compact and REMS Tiger ANC.
The dual purpose holder (Fig. 9) is screwed to a workbench and serves to
support the torque which occurs when cutting threads in both directions, i.e. in
forward and reverse direction of the thread die for right and left hand threads.
The retaining pin (B) is provided to hold the REMS Tiger ANC. Pipes/rods can
be cut at right angles.
2.6. Thread-cutting oils
Use only REMS thread-cutting oils. You will have perfect threading results, long
durability of dies as well as high protection of the drive unit. REMS recommends
the use of the practical and economical spray can.
REMS Spezial: High-alloyed, mineral based hread-cutting oil. For all materials:
steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, plastics. Pleasant to work with. Washes
out with water, approved by experts.
NOTICE
Mineral based thread-cutting oils are not permitted for drinking water
installations in some countries, e.g. Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In this
case, use the mineral oil-free REMS Sanitol.
REMS Sanitol: Mineral oil-free, synthetic thread-cutting oil for drinking water
supplies. Completely water-soluable. Complies with regulations: in Germany
DVGW Approval No. DW-0201AS2032, in Austria ÖVGW Approval No. W 1.303,
in Switzerland SVGW Approval No. 7808-649. Viscosity at –10°C: 190 mPa s
(cP). Pumpable to –28°C. No water added. Easy to use. Dyed red for rinse-out
inspection.
Both types of thread-cutting oils are available in spray cans as well as in cans
and barrels.
Use thread-cutting oils only undiluted!
3. Operation
3.1. Working procedure
1. Cut pipe/rod at a right angle and burr-free.
2. Fix the support bracket (2) about 10 cm from the end of the pipe or rod by
putting the support bracket from underneath against the pipe (rod) (Fig. 5) so
that it is centred between the prism clamping jaw (3) and the feed screw (4).
Tighten the feed screw.
3. Spray thread cutting oil (REMS Spray) onto the threading section (see 2.6.).
4. Place the drive unit on the pipe (rod) so that the motor housing (6) (see Fig. 1)
in REMS Amigo E, REMS Amigo, REMS Amigo 2 and REMS Amigo 2 Compact
comes to rest between the forks of the support bracket.
5. The bracket (2) of the REMS Mini-Amigo must be positioned between the motor
housing and the handle (5) (Fig. 7)!
6. Adjust the rotation lever (7) to the requested rotation (R for right hand threads
or reverse rotation for left hand threads, L for left hand thread or reverse rota-
tion for right hand threads).
7. Press tip switch (8) while holding the motor handle (9), press the die stock on
the handle (5) against the material. After 1 or 2 threads the die heads continue
to cut automatically.
8. Lubricate several times with thread-cutting oil (REMS Spray) during thread-
cutting.
9. The standard length for tapered threads is reached when the front edge of the
pipe is flush with the upper edge of the dies (not top of the cover).
10. When the desired thread length is reached, release the tip switch (8).
11. When the unit stops rotating turn the rotation lever (7) into reverse. The die
head (1) is run off the thread by pressing the tip switch (8) again.
NOTICE
Only change the direction on the rotation lever (7) when the unit
stops rotating!
3.2. Production of nipples and double nipples
For clamping short pieces of pipes and for the production of nipples and double
nipples use REMS Nippelspanner. They are available in sizes from ⅜ to 2" For
clamping pipe pieces (with or without thread) with the REMS Nippelspanner
the head of the Nippelspanner is expanded by turning the spindle (21) with a
tool (e.g. screwdriver). This must only be done when a pipe is put on (Fig. 5).
When using the REMS Nippelspanner it must be observed that no shorter
nipples are threaded than specified in the standards.
4. Maintenance
DANGER
Pull out the mains plug before maintenance and repair
work!
4.1. Maintenance
The REMS Amigo is maintenance-free. The gearbox has a permanent grease
filling and therefore requires no lubrication.
Clean the drive unit and the quick-change die head seat with a cloth moistened
with terpentine oil from time to time. Clean heavily silted die heads, e.g. with
turpentine oil.
4.2. Inspection/Servicing
DANGER
Pull out the mains plug before maintenance and repair
work! This work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
The REMS Mini-Amigo, REMS Amigo, REMS Amigo E, REMS Amigo 2 and
REMS Amigo 2 Compact motors have carbon brushes. These must be inspected
and replaced by an authorised REMS after-sales service facility in case of faults
(see 5. Troubles).
