18 Checking the Power Tool
18.1
Testing the Controls
Before starting work, confirm that the trigger
switch lockout (1), retaining button (4) and trigger
switch (3) are undamaged and functioning prop‐
erly:

WARNING
■ To reduce the risk of serious or fatal injuries,
keep hands, feet and other parts of the body
away from the cutting attachment. Do not
touch the cutting attachment while the battery
is inserted. Never touch the moving cutting
attachment with your hand or any part of your
body,
6.6.2. Keep bystanders at least 50
ft. (15 m) away while testing the controls.
To test the controls:
► Remove the battery.
► Attempt to depress the trigger switch.
If the trigger switch can be depressed without
first depressing the trigger switch lockout, take
the trimmer / brushcutter to an authorized
STIHL servicing dealer to be repaired before
use.
► Press down on the trigger switch lockout and
retaining button. Make sure they move freely
and spring back into place when released.
► Insert the battery.
► Hold the power tool firmly with both hands,
your fingers wrapped tightly around the grip‐
ping surface (2) of the control handle. Depress
and hold the trigger switch lockout, press the
retaining button with your thumb and squeeze
the trigger switch with your index finger.
The trimmer / brushcutter should switch on. If
it does not, take the trimmer / brushcutter to
an authorized STIHL servicing dealer to be
repaired before use.
► Release the trigger switch.
The trimmer / brushcutter should switch off.

If the trimmer / brushcutter does not switch off
after you release the trigger switch, remove
the battery and take the trimmer / brushcutter
to an authorized STIHL servicing dealer to be
repaired before use.
19 During Operation
19.1
Selecting the Power Level
The unit can be operated at three different power
settings, indicated by LEDs on the control han‐
dle. The higher the power level, the faster the
cutting attachment will rotate.
To set the power level:
► Push the power level switch (1) with your
thumb and release it.
The LEDs indicate the current power level.
► Push the power level switch to activate the
next power level.
Performing this operation at the highest power
level will cause the unit to return to the first
power level.
Generally, battery life will be shorter when oper‐
ating continuously at the higher power levels.
