10 Hybrid installation

10.1 Introduction

Follow the installation instructions from the corresponding manual
for the diesel engine.
The diesel engine of a hybrid installation may not be of unlimited
size, since the torque must be transmitted to the propeller shaft via
the electric motor shaft.
The maximum torque that the electric motor shaft may transmit is
80 Nm (M max).
The maximum engine power is dependent on the reduction of the
gearbox and the speed at which the engine delivers its maximum
power.
P max. = M max. x 2 x π x n propeller shaft
N.B.: P in W, M in Nm and n in rev/sec
Example:
The gear box has a reduction of 2:1 and the engine speed (n en-
gine) = 3000 rev/min
The propeller shaft speed are therefore: 3000 / 2 = 1500 rev/min
The propeller shaft speed in rev/sec are then:
1500 / 60 = 25 rev/sec
The engine may then deliver maximum power of
P max. = 80 x 2 x π x 25 = 12560 Watt
= 12,56 kW (= 17 hp)

10.2 Engine support

Bear the following in mind when preparing the engine support:
• the diesel engine must be fitted directly in front of the electric
motor
• the power shaft from the reverse clutch must lie directly in line
with the shaft from the electric motor.

10.3 Flexible coupling

Connect the power shaft (flange) of the gear box with the shaft end
on the front of the electric motor using a flexible coupling:
Vetus Bullflex type 1 for shaft ø 20 mm.

10.4 Propeller

Consult table 2 on page 55 to select the correct propeller.
Table 2 gives propeller dimensions which are the best possible for
use with the Vetus diesel engine M2.06 using a reverse clutch with
reduction of 2:1.
N.B. The maximum power of the diesel engine is greater than that
required to allow the ships (with waterline length and displacement
as shown in the table) to reach the hull speeds given.
By these propeller dimensions the electric motor will have to supply
maximum power of 2.2 kW at ca. 960 rev/min. The efficiency of the
electric motor is then lower.
If a propeller is chosen for a hybrid installation as advised in table 1
then the hull speed will be reached but the maximum power of the
diesel engine will not be used.
The electric motor shaft, seen from behind, must rotate clockwise
during forward sailing.

10.5 Electrical system

The electric motor must never be in use while sailing on the diesel
engine.
A neutral position switch must be built into the diesel engine operat-
ing handle.
An oil pressure switch is fitted on the diesel engine which operates a
warning light if the oil pressure is too low.
Fit the plug of the cable delivered into the socket on the electric
motor.
Connect the cable to the neutral position switch and to the oil pres-
sure switch, see page 57.
The electric motor will now function as generator while sailing on the
diesel engine and recharge the batteries.
