Notes on the fittings set, power set and ballast keel
These three sets are necessary if you wish to create a scale
model ship capable of sailing. Parts from the Fittings Set and
the Power Set have to be installed during the initial stages of
construction, so we strongly recommend that you purchase
these items before you start construction.
Sequence of assembly
In general terms the sequence of assembly follows the num-
bering of the kit components; the number before the point indi-
cates the Stage of construction, the number after the point the
individual part.
We recommend that you study the instructions carefully, refer-
ring to the parts list and the illustrations, to obtain a clear
understanding of each stage of construction.
Scrap material which has to be removed from the vacuum-
moulded parts is shown hatched-in on the parts themselves or
in the illustrations.
Clean up the cut edges of the trimmed vacuum-moulded parts
using abrasive paper.
Drill the holes required in the vacuum-moulded parts at the
marked points, referring to the dimensions stated in the illust-
rations.
The laser-cut parts include small connecting lugs which can
be cut through using a fine balsa knife.
Do not separate the parts from their sheets until they are nee-
ded for the stage in hand.
The identification drawings will help you locate the pre-cut
parts.
Don't immediately throw away excess material left over from
sheet, strip and rod material, as it may be required later for
making other small parts.
When gluing parts together ensure that any marked or pun-
ched points are left exposed, as they indicate where holes are
to be drilled.

All joint surfaces must be roughened with abrasive paper befo-
re applying glue.
Use only the adhesives which we expressly recommend.
Observe the instructions supplied by the adhesive manufactu-
rer.
Do not apply thick fillets of Stabilit-Express; it is always better
to spread this adhesive thinly.
Parts should be held together with clamps or adhesive tape
while glued joints are hardening.
When you need to apply small quantities of cyano glue (Speed
Extra or Type 2) use a pin or a length of thin wire.
Soldered joints are only effective when the metal surfaces are
really clean and bright. Sand all metal parts and remove any
traces of grease from the surfaces before painting.
Directions such as "left-hand" are as seen from the stern
of the model looking forward.
All dimensions in the text and the illustrations are stated in mil-
limetres.
The plans
Plan sheets 1 - 3 are drawn to 1 : 2 scale; plans 4 - 6 are full-
size. The numbers in circles indicate the Stage of construction
to which the drawings apply.
Note that the illustrations are only printed in the German-lan-
guage instructions. Please refer to the illustrations in that part
of the text.
Painting the model
The bare wooden parts should be given 3 or 4 coats of wood
wax after all glued joints have been completed.
Any gaps between plastic parts should be filled and made
good using plastic filler paste, e.g. robbe rostuff Light, and
sanded back smooth when the filler has set hard.
Before painting the plastic parts it is important to remove all
traces of grease from the surfaces by wiping with white spirit
or similar (not cellulose thinners). Don't touch the surfaces
after cleaning them. We recommend that the hull should be
given an initial coat of primer, rubbed down carefully before
the final colour coats are applied.
If you are aiming at a neat, cleanly defined finish, individual
parts must be painted separately. This is the general procedu-
re:
Each part which is to be a separate colour should first be trim-
med to fit accurately on the model, then painted, and finally
glued or screwed in place.
Where parts are to be finished in more than one colour, you
have to use masking techniques: use Tesafilm or PVC tape -
not paper masking tape - to mask out the base colour, then
apply the second colour and peel off the tape as soon as the
fresh paint is touch-dry.
Joint surfaces of parts already painted should be sanded befo-
re gluing.
The instructions inform you when it is necessary to paint cer-
tain areas before continuing with construction. Otherwise it is
