General notes on completing the sails (Stages 27 - 29)
In the basic kit the seven sails of the Valdivia are supplied pre-
cut to shape. All the sails are drawn full-size on the plans to
assist you in carrying out the work required on them.
The sail doublers (tablings) are supplied as pre-cut pieces of
self-adhesive sailcloth. As a general rule attach the doublers
in the sequence of the part numbers, as this produces the cor-
rect arrangement as shown in the drawing. All the doublers are
pre-cut 2 mm oversize along the outside edges. Once atta-
ched, they can be trimmed back to the outline of the sail.
The "front face" of the sails is visible when you are looking at
the right-hand (starboard) side of the model, and it is this side
which is shown on the plans.
The sail doublers are identified by a combination of numbers
and letters. The capital letters indicate the doublers on the
front face of the sails.
The doublers should first be attached to the front face of all the
sails.
Note: when attaching the doublers take care to position them
accurately, as it is not possible to adjust them subsequently
once fitted.

-
Lay the flying jib 27.1 flat on the plan and weight it down
(books) to prevent it shifting.
-
Carefully peel off the first doubler strip "ST" from sheet G.
You may need to run a sharp knife along the die-cut lines.
Apply the doubler strip carefully, avoiding creases and ten-
sion; take care not to distort the cloth.
-
Apply the tablings (corner reinforcements) in the sequen-
ce dictated by the capital letters.
-
Mark the cloth sections on the sail starting at the centre,
keeping them parallel and equi-distant.
-
Turn the sail over and apply the doublers on the reverse
face. Mark the cloth sections by drawing over the lines on
the front face of the sail.
-
Prepare the other foresails 27.2 (jib) and 27.3 (foresail) in
the same manner.

Assembly instructions
Valdivia
Be sure to apply the doublers to the sails flat, without creases,
but not under tension.
The long narrow doubler strips "ST" (6 x 710 mm) are always
attached to the front face of the sails only.
Mark the cloth section seams using an HB-lead pencil. Don't
continue the lines over the sail doublers.
Turn the sail over, mark the seams on the back face and
attach the doublers marked with the small letters. The position
of these doublers is shown by dotted lines. Melt the holes for
the eyelets using a pointed soldering iron (approx. 2 mm Ø).
Fit all the eyelets from the same side , and splay the plain end
to secure them.
Melt holes no larger than 1 mm Ø for the stay hooks, mast
rings and lacings.
The reef points are fitted to the sails directly using a darning
needle.
The exact procedure is described in the individual Stages.

-
Mark the location of the reef points on the doubler strips.
We recommend that you do not attach the reef points until
the sails have been attached.
-
Melt holes about 2 mm Ø in the corners of the sails to
accept the thimbles (eyelets). Insert the aluminium eyelets
27.4 from the underside, then press the stamp "S" firmly
over the plain end of the thimble to press the sailcloth
against the thimble's flange. Carefully splay the eyelet
using a narrow punch. Splay the thimble just to the point
where it is firmly seated, but without damaging the
sailcloth - Figs. 271 - 274.
-
Melt the 0.8 mm Ø holes for the stay hooks 27.5 in the
positions shown on the plan and fit the S-hooks - Fig. 275.
Once fitted, bend both loops closed so that the hooks can-
not come adrift later.
