PAR. 10.1 - CHECK TEST
BOWIE & DICK TEST
The Bowie & Dick test checks the extent of steam penetration in a porous load. Take all except the central
tray out of the autoclave chamber. Place on this central tray the test pack with no other instruments. Switch
On the autoclave. Select the Bowie & Dick cycle by pressing the SELECT button; press the START/STOP
button to start the cycle. The cycle time is 3 min. 30 sec.. The test's result is validated by the test pack.
HELIX TEST
A Helix Test should be performed to check steam penetration into hollow bodies (such as turbines). Remove
all except the central tray from the chamber (as with the Bowie & Dick Test). Put the Helix Indicator System
inside the chamber, select the cycle and run by pressing the START/STOP button.
VACUUM TEST
Run a vacuum test to check if hydraulic system seals. A negative test outcome does not necessarily
mean that sterilisation will immediately adversely effected. It is however a warning that there could
be a failure in the long term. For this reason check the autoclave regularly.
It advisable to carry out the Vacuum test every day on switching on the autoclave, without non instruments in
the sterilisation chamber. Switch On the autoclave. Select Vacuum test by pressing the SELECT button and
press the START/STOP button to run the cycle. The autoclave should reach the selected degreee of vacuum
maintain it for 15 minutes. Should there be a variation in excess of 1/10 bar the autoclave indicates the fault
with the alarm message A500 (pressure drop). If the test is successful the Display reads END CYCLE. Each
message is confirmed by printout.
If the test is failed, proceed as following:
Clean the door seal and chamber contact surface carefully. Check for a good tight door closing seal. If the
door does not close firmly, carry out the door adjustment as decribed in paragraph 15.
Repeat the test. If it fails again, call technical assistance.
BIOLOGICAL TEST
The autoclave is equipped with a Biological Indicator Incubator on board (see cover photo). This device
operates independently of the autoclave. Only carry out this test when the autoclave is not running. Proceed
as follows:
1. Place a test tube on both the upper and the lower trays.
2. Select and start a sterilisation cycle.
3. At the end of the cycle remove the test tubes and leave them to cool for at least ten minutes.
4. Crush these test tubes with the pliers included in the test tube pack, and place them in the incubator
together a test tube that was not sterilised with them.
5. Switch on the incubator with the switch on the right side of the control panel. The green pilot light shows
that the incubator is running. The green Led starts flashing when the pre-set temperature is reached and
shows the incubator temperature is constant.
Leave the test tubes in incubation for at least 48 hours. Check test tube colour. The non-sterilised test tube
will be yellow. The sterilised test tubes will be purple. For detailed procedures follow the instructions
enclosed in the BI.O.K. test pack (SUPPLIED ON REQUEST).
