7.4. Rescue evacuation of a person
NOTE: This section is not a rescue procedure.
The purpose of this section is simply to give an example
to describe how to properly use derope™ descenders.
Any rescue operation must only be performed by a
person who has been trained and qualified for rescue
operations. Before undertaking a rescue operation, you
must first inform the emergency people.
Throughout the duration of the descent, the rescue
operator must have uninterrupted visual contact with
the person to be evacuated in order to act if necessary.
The rescue operations described in this section are
performed using a derope™ UP descender with
recovery system comprising a handwheel for use with
persons equipped with a fall-arrest system. Insofar as
possible, the rescue operation should intervene next to
the person to be evacuated. When this is not the case,
the rescue operator should intervene at the fastening
point for the fall-arrest system used with the person to
be evacuated.
In the example which follows, the person to be
evacuated is equipped with a fall-arrest system and has
just fallen. The rescue operator intervenes in contact
with the person to be evacuated.
1. After having accessed the person to be evacuated
and after having installed the derope™ descender
as instructed in § 6, fasten the person to be
evacuated by the connector on the end of the
evacuation strand of the derope™ descender to:
– a fastening point of the fall-arrest harness EN 361:
these points are marked A when they can be
used alone or A/2 when they must be used in
combination with another fastening point marked
A/2.
– a fastening point of the rescue harness EN 1497 or
of the rescue strap EN 1498 class B, identified by a
label next to the fastening point.
2. Using the handwheel, raise the person to be
evacuated to release the tension on the fall-arrest
system.
3. Run the free strand of the rope through the rope
guide then through the clam cleat.
4. Fold in the handwheel handle of the derope™ UP
descender.
5. Disconnect the person to be evacuated from the
personʼs fall-arrest system at the fastening point.
6. Start the descent by releasing the free strand from
the clam cleat.
7.5. Lifting a person
When using the derope™ UP R device on a tripod
mounted tracpode console from Tractel
a person:
– Either by turning the hand wheel manually.
– Or by using an electric drill / driver.
DANGER: It is imperative to fold in the
retractable handle before using the electric drill /
driver to operate the derope™ UP R.
DANGER: It is imperative to hold the drill /
driver with both hands when raising a person from
above.
DANGER: It is imperative not to let go of the
electric drill/driver while the person to evacuate is
suspended from the derope™ UP R device.
8. Unauthorized use of derope™
equipment
It is strictly prohibited:
1. To install or use the derope™ descender without
first having been authorized, trained and recognized
competent in use of the descender, or failing this,
without working under the responsibility of a person
authorized, trained and recognized competent in
use of the descender.

on the unit are not present or legible.
