4 Flexible propeller shaft coupling

The propeller shaft coupling supplied takes up the propulsion
thrust when traveling both ahead and astern. It is not necessary
to fit a thrust bearing behind the flexible coupling.
The coupling is designed for a 25 mm diameter propeller shaft.
VD00172
When a propeller shaft of larger diameter is used, it should be
reduced to a diameter of 25 mm over the length of the hub (45
mm). Radius 'R' must be a minimum of 2 mm.
VD00173
It is essential that the motor and propeller shaft are in line.
The maximum allowable misalignment of the propeller shaft
is 2°.
When the vibration dampers have been adjusted correctly, the
motor can be aligned by turning both the adjuster nuts fore and
aft, left and right, exactly the same number of turns.
Check the alignment again when the boat is in the water.
VD00174
The propeller shaft should be inserted into the hub over the
length stated.
The shaft and hub should be free of grease and dirt (*).

VD00175
Tighten up the bolts to a torque of 60 Nm (44 lbs.ft).
Use a torque wrench for this, tightening up 'by feel' will not give
a satisfactory result.
VD00176
Take care that the rubber components are not affected by sol-
vents.

5 Propeller shaft installation

The propeller shaft should have a diameter of at least 25 mm.
VD00177
Because of the axial movement of the propeller shaft, there
must be a minimum free space between:
- The outer bearing and the propeller hub;
- The inner bearing and the coupling hub.
Lock the propeller shaft cap nut with a lock plate.
