INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE
1. SAFETY RULES
ELECTRIC SHOCK MAY BE DEADLY.
- Electric installation of plasma cutting unit must be
carried out by "SKILLED" personnel in accordance
with ACCIDENT PREVENTION LAWS and RULES.
- Make sure that power supply cable is properly
connected to "EARTH PLATE".
- The plasma cutting unit should be connected only
and exclusively to a power source with the neutral
lead connected to earth.
- Avoid any "DIRECT CONTACT" with NON-insulated
parts of the "CUTTING CIRCUIT". (1)
- Always wear protection clothing. Ex.:insulating
gloves and shoes.
- Keep protection wear clean and do not damage
them.
- DO NOT use cables and torch, if the insulation is
worn out or if electric connections are loosened.
- DO NOT use the unit in damp rooms or in the rain.
Switch off the machine during routine maintenance
of the torch, ex.: replacement of electrode and
nozzle.
- Disconnect the machine from the outlet during
installation and operations of inspections and
maintenance.
NOTE (1)
The electric circuit includes all conductors crossed by
cutting current.
IRRADIATION PRODUCED BY PLASMA
ARC MAY DAMAGE THE EYES AND CAUSE SKIN
BURNS.
- Always protect the eyes with non-actinic glasses for
iron soldering set on masks or on graduation helmets:
DIN 4-10, depending on the cutting mode (close or
distant mode), and on the intensity of current.
- Wear protective clothing without exposing the skin to
UV rays produced by the arc.
- Make sure that everybody standing in proximity is
protected by the harmful effects of the arc.
SMOKE AND GAS MAY BE DANGEROUS
TO YOUR HEALTH.
- Ensure a proper change of air as well as the existence
of smoke suction devices in the area of the cutting arc.
Ex.: suction benches or at water level.
- Use individual respirators if ventilation is not enough
to intercept all smokes and gases.
- Do not cut material cleaned with chlorinated solvents
or near said solvents: vapors from the action of arc UV
rays may produce toxic gases.
- Avoid cutting on painted, galvanic coated surfaces or
parts dirty with oil or grease; clean the part thoroughly
before cutting it.
NOISE MAY DAMAGE HEARING.
- The level of noise produced by the cutting arc may
exceed 85 dB (A).
- Check the level of INDIVIDUAL DAILY EXPOSURE to
the noise.
- Use proper means of individual protection in case the
limit is exceeded.
FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS MAY BE IGNITED
BY SPARKS AND HOT SLAGS.
- Do not cut on containers and pipes containing
inflammable products or liquid and gaseous fuels.
- Remove all inflammable material from the cutting
area, wastes included, ( rags, cartons, etc.) within a
range of 10 meters.
- Make sure there are proper fire proof means in the
cutting area.
2. GENERAL INFORMATION
PLASMA ARC AND BASIC PRINCIPLES FOR THE
PERFORMANCE OF PLASMA CUTTING.
- Plasma is a gas which is heated at a very high
temperature and ionized so as to become an electic
conductor.
- This cutting procedure uses plasma to transfer the
electric arc to the metal part which is melted by the
heat and then separated.
- The torch requires compressed air coming from one
feed source both for plasma and for protection and
cooling gas.
- The cycle is started by a high frequency/high tension
arc ("HF") which ignites a pilot arc between the
electrode ( - polarity) and the nozzle of the torch ( +
polarity).
- By bringing the torch near the part to be cut, which is
connected to the + polarity of the current source, the
pilot arc is then moved away thus creating a plasma
arc between the electrode (-) and the part itself
(cutting arc).
- The pilot arc and HF are excluded as soon as the
plasma arc settles between the electrode and the
part.
- The pilot arc time, as set at warehouse, is 2s; if
transfer is not accomplished by this time the cycle is
immediately stopped with the exception of cooling air.
- In order to start a new cycle it is necessary to release
the torch button and then to push it again.
