Heel wedge hardness: The colour of the heel wedge indicates the hardness (see fig. 4).
Ottobock recommends starting with the preinstalled heel wedge.
1) Pull the prosthetic foot apart slightly and remove the existing heel wedge.
2) Align the other heel wedge so the Ottobock lettering is the right way up and the tip points to
anterior.
3) Insert the heel wedge into the prosthetic foot (see fig. 2).
5.2.5.2 Checking the stiffness of the functional ring
The stiffness of the functional ring influences the level of comfort while walking. With the Harmony
vacuum pump, the functional ring also determines the efficiency of vacuum generation. The stiff
ness is specified on the functional ring (the higher the number, the greater the stiffness).
Functional ring while walking
Soft damping for the user. The functional ring is not
compressed to the stop.
User hits the stop during damping. The functional
ring is fully compressed.
No damping for the user. The functional ring is not
compressed.
5.2.5.3 Checking vacuum generation (Harmony only)
Vacuum generation is tested during the dynamic fitting.
Recommended materials: 755Z37 pressure gauge (with T-piece)
>
1) Disconnect the hose from the suction connector of the vacuum pump.
2) Connect the hose to the T-piece of the pressure gauge.
3) Connect the pressure gauge with the T-piece to the intake valve on the vacuum pump.
4) Attach the pressure gauge to the prosthesis so that the patient is able to move freely.
5) Have the patient walk 50 steps to activate the vacuum pump.
6) Check whether the vacuum is between 340 hPa (10 inHG) and 680 hPa (20 inHG) and is
maintained for 20 seconds.
If a sufficient vacuum is built up and the vacuum does not decrease within 20 seconds, the
vacuum system is functioning correctly.
If a sufficient vacuum is built up but the vacuum decreases within 20 seconds, determine the
cause (see page 24).
7) Remove the pressure gauge after completing the test and reinstall the hose on the suction
connection of the vacuum pump.
5.3 Installing the outlet hose (Harmony only)
CAUTION
Improper installation of the outlet hose
Skin irritation, formation of eczema or infections due to contamination with germs
Run the outlet hose in such a way that the hose opening is not directed towards parts of the
body or into the cosmetic cover.
A valve with sound suppressor is installed on the outlet of the vacuum pump. The valve has to be
removed in order to install an outlet hose (available separately).
1) Pull the outlet valve with sound suppressor off the vacuum pump.
2) Insert an outlet valve with hose connector into the functional ring. An arrow on the valve indic
ates the flow direction.
3) Install the desired outlet hose according to its instructions for use.

Functional ring too soft
Functional ring too hard
Possible: Heel wedge
too soft
Correction/solution
Install a harder functional
ring (see page 25)
Install a softer functional
ring (see page 25)
