Consistent and excellent exposure of the right and left atrium, tricuspid, and mitral valves is fundamental
®
to intracardiac surgical procedures. By using the Kapp McCarthy
Full-Sternotomy Retractor, the
surgeon can gain the optimum exposure necessary for a successful surgical outcome.
DESCRIPTION / INTENDED USE
This self-retaining retractor was designed to provide excellent exposure for a variety of valve operations,
Maze procedure, or other intracardiac procedures. It can also be used for coronary artery bypass operations or
for full-sternotomy procedures depending upon the patient's size. This retractor is designed to allow for better
exposure for valve procedures. Recommendations for cleaning and sterilization are included in this manual.
The device is supplied non-sterile and must be cleaned and sterilized before use.
PRE-SURGICAL ASSEMBLY
Figure #1 Position your chest spreader (A) as shown. Slide the Main Bracket (B) onto the stationary or
moveable arm of the chest spreader. The Main Bracket must have screw (C) facing outside of the chest
cavity. The main bracket should be placed on the chest spreader blade farthest from the surgeon. Tighten the
locking screw (C) on the flat surface of the mounting bar.
Figure #2 The Right Angle Transverse Bar (D) or the Straight Transverse Bar (H) is mounted in the top
hole of the Main Bracket (B) and secured by tightening the top locking thumb screw (E) onto the flat
mounting surface of the transverse bar.
Figure #3 Insert Retractor Blade in top or bottom hole of the Standard Universal Clamps (F) as shown
(surgeon's preference). The other hole is used to mount the retractor blade on the Transverse Bar.
Figure #4 An additional retractor blade can be attached to the Right Angle Transverse Bar between the main
bracket and the right angle bend using a Split Universal Clamp (G). The retractor blade must be inserted into
the bottom hole of the split universal clamp.

on the second flat mounting surface.

NOTE: All screws on the Kapp McCarthy
Full-Sternotomy Retractor are non-removable.
NOTE: The retractor blades may be easily repositioned during surgery by loosening the wing nut on
the universal clamp(s).
CLEANING
Immediately after surgery, rinse the instruments under warm, not hot, water to remove all blood, body fluids
and tissue. If delays prevent immediate rinsing, soak the instrument in a solution of water and neutral (pH 7)
detergent prior to cleaning.
ULTRASONIC CLEANING
Separate the components and place them into the ultrasonic cleaner. Clean per instrument protocol. Rinse the
instruments with water immediately after ultrasonic cleaning.
AUTOMATIC WASHER STERILIZERS
Follow manufacturer's recommendations ensuring instruments are lubricated after last rinse cycle and before
sterilization cycle.
According to the Robert Koch Recommendations from September 2012, mechanical cleaning and
disinfection should be conducted at temperatures in excess of 93° C.
AUTOCLAVE STERILIZATION
Prior to autoclave sterilization, lubricate all instrument parts which have metal-to-metal contact using surgical
lubricants such as instrument milk. Do not use industrial lubricants. Instruments must be unlocked before
