17. Range

The transmission range of the radio signals between the outdoor sensor and weather station
does not exceed 30 m under ideal conditions.
This range specification refers to the so-called "free-field range".
However, this ideal arrangement (e.g. weather station and outdoor sensor on a plain, even
meadow without trees, houses etc.) never exists in practice.
Usually, the weather station is placed inside a house and the outside sensor is placed e.g. under
a carport or at a window.
Due to the different influences on the wireless transmission, no specific range can be guaranteed.
However, trouble-free operation is usually possible in a single family house.
Please review chapter 16 if the weather station does not receive any data from the outdoor
sensor despite insertion of new batteries.
Sometimes the range can be considerably reduced due to:
• Walls, reinforced concrete ceilings
• Coated/vapour-deposited insulating glass panes, aluminium windows or the like
• Vehicles
• Trees, brushes, soil, rocks
• Proximity to metal & conducting objects (e.g. radiators)
• Proximity to human bodies
• Broadband interference, e.g. in residential areas (DECT telephones, mobiles, radio-
controlled headphones, radio-controlled speakers, other radio-controlled weather stations,
babyphones etc.)
• Proximity to electric motors, transformers, mains adapters
• Proximity to mains sockets, network cables
• Proximity to badly shielded or uncovered computers in use or other electrical appliances
