8.6 Grounding

8.6.1 Why ground

Before starting to work on the electrical system make sure
that all components are disconnected from the power
source. Only switch on the system when you have finished
all work.
Grounding is mandatory to protect the users from potential-
ly fatal electric shocks. It also protects against electric charg-
ing or a short circuit inside the device. This is accomplished
through clamping, bolting or other mechanical means to
provide an effective grounding path to the earth to ensure
safe operation at all time.
The grounding is also important to the system for lightning
protection. In general it is meant for indirect lightning strikes
and induced electrical potentials during operation of the
pump system.

8.6.2 How to ground

A protective earth connection for the controller must be
connected to the left GND terminal. The right GND terminal,
next to the motor phases (L1, L2, L3), is for the protective
earth wire of the motor.

8.6.3 Insufficient ground source

Where there is an inadequate ground source you can use a
grounding rod. A grounding profile rod should be located
about 4 – 5m (13 – 16 ft) maximum from the controller. The
cable must not carry any mechanical loads. The rod must be
completely buried in the ground (0.5 m / 1.5 ft below ground
level). You must refer to local standards and requirements.
The grounding cable should be a copper cable with a cross
section of not less than 16 mm
CAUTION – The wiring has to be done by
qualified staff only. Make sure that the
grounding cable has a reliable connection
to the ground source.
The earth cable must be sufficient to
carry the maximum supply fault current.
