Intended use

The electrical surgical motor ELAN EC (GA830 and GA835) is used to oper-
ate various Aesculap handpieces and tools.
The ELAN EC GA835 is also fitted with a coolant pump for cooling and/or
irrigation of the tools. The motor revolution speed and torque are trans-
ferred to the handpiece via an elliptical shaft. The motor is activated and
controlled via a foot control.
The device meets the type B requirements according to IEC/
DIN EN 60601-1.
Operation
Indoors, outside of the explosion-hazard area.
Set-up location
Table, equipment cart or mobile stand in the non-sterile area.
Type and fields of application
The field of application depends on the elliptical shaft used, the handpiece
and the tool.
Processing of hard and soft tissue in:
major bone surgery (hip and knee endoprosthesis, traumatology, car-
diothoracic surgery)
Minor bone surgery (OMF surgery, hand and foot surgery)
Microsurgery (ENT, neurosurgery, spine surgery)

Operating principle

ELAN EC (GA830 and GA835)
Motor
The ELAN EC has an integrated EC motor (electronic commutated) and the
associated power and control electronics. The motor speed remains con-
stant, including under stress. The motor can be operated in right rotation
and left rotation mode. The maximum speed is 20,000 rpm.
Elliptical shaft sensor
The elliptical shaft sensor 13 on the front of the device protects against
disruption of the connected elliptical shaft.
When a macro elliptical shaft is used (GA156, GA172, GB400, GB401), the
device automatically switches to right rotation mode and limits the max-
imum motor speed to 15 000 rpm. It is not possible to work in left rotation
mode.
When a micro or mini elliptical shaft is used (GA173, GA176, GA186) it is
possible to work in right rotation and left rotation mode. The maximum
speed is 20 000 rpm. An acoustic signal sounds when the motor is run in
left rotation mode.
Note
The micro elliptical shaft must be fitted with an elliptical shaft sensor. The
sleeve can be recognized by a circumferential notch in the front third. It can
be ordered under article number GA183R. If a micro elliptical shaft does not
have a sensor, the device automatically switches to right rotation mode
and limits the maximum speed to 15 000 rpm - the left rotation mode is
then blocked. The elliptical shafts GA173 are fitted as standard as of
SN: 06985 and GA176 as of SN: 13373.
Thermal overload protection
The automatic switch-off mechanism prevents the motor from being
overloaded/damaged if a set operating temperature is exceeded.
It is only possible to switch the motor back on after sufficient cooling of
the motor.
When the device is switched on, a fan is activated.
Voltage range
The device can be operated in the voltage ranges of 100 V~-120 V~ or
220 V~-240 V~ (+/–10 %).
