17 During Operation
To test the controls:
► Remove the battery.
► Attempt to depress the trigger switch.
If the trigger switch can be depressed without
first unlocking the retaining latch, take the trim‐
mer to an authorized STIHL servicing dealer to
be repaired before use.
► Press down on the Ergo-Lever. Make sure it
moves freely and springs back into place
when released.
► Unlock the retaining latch by pushing it for‐
ward.
When you release the retaining latch it should
return to the locked position.
► Unlock the retaining latch and depress the
Ergo-Lever at the same time to keep the
retaining latch unlocked.
When you release the retaining latch, it should
remain unlocked as long as you hold down the
Ergo-Lever.
► Release the retaining latch and Ergo-Lever.
► Insert the battery.
► Hold the trimmer firmly with one hand on the
gripping surface (4) of the control handle and
with the other hand firmly on the loop handle.
While pushing the retaining latch forward,
squeeze the trigger switch with your index fin‐
ger.
The trimmer should switch on. If it does not,
take the trimmer to an authorized STIHL serv‐
icing dealer to be repaired before use.
► Release the trigger switch.
The trimmer should switch off.
If the cutting attachment does not stop after
you release the trigger switch, remove the bat‐
tery and take the trimmer to an authorized
STIHL servicing dealer to be repaired before
use.

17.1
Using the Trimmer
WARNING
■ To reduce the risk of personal injury, never
work with the trimmer in the rain or in wet or
damp conditions,
clothing and protective apparel, including
proper eye protection, when operating your
trimmer,

The trimmer is designed for two-handed opera‐
tion.
► Swing the trimmer back and forth carefully in a
controlled arc parallel to the ground.
► Move forward slowly, keeping two hands on
the trimmer at all times.
When trimming, a bump guard (1) limits the cut‐
ting range of the mowing line and helps prevent
unwanted damage to vegetation in certain cir‐
cumstances (see illustration). Always remove the
battery before mounting or adjusting the bump
guard.
For optimum performance, observe the recom‐
mended ambient temperature ranges,
Observe all applicable laws, regulations, stand‐
ards and ordinances.

Adjusting the Nylon Line
WARNING
■ To reduce the risk of personal injury from unin‐
tended activation, always switch off the motor
and remove the battery from the trimmer
before manually adding or adjusting the nylon
line.
AutoCut Mowing Heads
► While pressing the trigger switch, tap the rotat‐
ing mowing head on the ground.
Approximately 1.2 in. (30 mm) of fresh nylon line
will be advanced with each tap. The line limiting
blade in the deflector trims the mowing line to the
proper length.
The bump feed mechanism will not advance
additional line if the mowing line is shorter than
1 in. (25 mm). To feed additional line manually:
► Switch off the trimmer and remove the battery.
