Lens & Helmet Maintenance
Replacing the Outer Protection Plate
1) Remove the front panel by pulling one of its upper corners
away from the helmet (Figures 5 and 6). Lift out the old lens
protection plate.
2) Remove the protective film from both sides of the new protec-
tion plate. Place the new plate into position, sliding its tabs
into the lens's two slots (Figure 7).
3) Place the front panel back into position by inserting its two
bottom tabs into the openings in the helmet shell (Figure 8).
"Hook" one of the upper corners of the panel onto the helmet
shell. Then, using either your thumb or the open palm of your
hand, push the opposite corner until it snaps into place
(Figures 9 and 10). If you have any difficulty making the
second corner lock into place, try pushing slightly off to the
side rather than straight back.
The front panel must always be installed prior
to welding. Never use the helmet without the
front panel installed (Figure 11).
Replacing the Inner Protection Plate
1) To replace the inner protection plate, first lift out the old plate
(Figure 12).

2) Remove the protective film from both sides of the new plate.
Insert the two corners of one side of the plate into the corner
"pockets" of the lens. Bend the protection plate so you can insert
the other two corners into the opposite end pockets (Figure 13).
Installing Magnifying Lenses
Most standard magnifying lenses, available from your local
welding distributor, can be used with all Speedglas welding
helmets.* Simply remove the front panel and outer protection
plate, place the magnifying lens in front of the lens cassette, and
then re-install the outer protection plate
and front panel.
*Note: Do NOT use any magnifying lens
that does not fit between the lens cassette
and outer protection plate. The outer
protection plate MUST be fully seated
with its two tabs completely inserted into
the lens's two slots (Figure 7).
Removing the Lens Cassette/
Changing The Batteries
The batteries should be replaced when the lens does not become
light when switched ON and the lens is directed towards a dark
surface. (On the Speedglas 9000V and 9000X lenses, the low
battery indicator will flash repeatedly when the battery should be
replaced.) Use only high quality batteries.
To change its batteries, you first remove the lens cassette from the
helmet. Remove the front panel, as explained in "Replacing the
Outer Protection Plate" section above (Figures 5 and 6).
Then, squeeze together the two tabs found at the top of the lens
cassette (Figure 14); you can then lift out the lens from the
helmet shell.
