Make sure the lens's outer protection plate is
clean and that dirt is not covering the sensors
on the front of the lens. Dirt could keep the
lens from sensing a welding arc and therefore
cause the lens not to darken.
Dark Shade Selection
(9000V and 9000X only)
Five different dark shade levels are available to the user: 9, 10, 11,
12 and 13. Check with the Shade Guide on page 15 to determine
the proper dark shade setting for your application. To select a dark
shade, simply turn the SHADE dial so the arrow points to the
desired shade number.
The welding lens has two independent methods of detecting a
welding arc:
1) The shade numbers in gold should be used for most types of
welding, both indoors and outdoors. For outdoor welding, the
shade numbers in gold are recommended so the sensitivity of
the lens will not be affected by sunlight.
(NOTE: When using the gold shade settings, the Sensitivity
Knob has no function.)
2) The shade numbers in red (9, 11 and 13) should be used in

applications with low welding amperage and/or very stable
arcs (for example, TIG), or when light from the residual weld
pool is a problem:
A) Look through the lens under the ambient lighting condi-
tions that will be used during the welding process, direct-
ing the lens to the workpiece.
B) Turn the Sensitivity Knob fully clockwise; if the welding
lens is still in its light state, leave the knob in this posi-
tion. If the lens goes dark, turn the knob counter-clock-
wise just until the lens becomes light. The Sensitivity is
now correctly adjusted for the given ambient lighting—
any additional light (i.e. from the welding arc) will trigger
the lens into the dark state.
Gas Welding and Cutting
Speedglas lenses can be used for gas welding and cutting when in
the OFF state. The lens is shade 5-6 when OFF.
