TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
OBSERVED PROBLEM:
F. Valve Does Not Work Manually:
(pilot flame goes out when stem is
released after 60 seconds [see figure 5]):
G. Electronics continue to spark after
positive pilot flame:
H. Positive pilot flame, but valve shuts
off after approximately
10 seconds or when appliance gets
hot.
I. Short tones but sparking does not
start, and there is no noise from
powering dc solenoid:
J. Pilot flame lights but there is no main
gas flow:
K. Main burner ignites, but goes out
again after approx. 22 seconds.
POSSIBLE CAUSE:
1. Defective thermocouple 1.
2. Low gas pressure.
3. Defective valve.
1. Receiver damaged.
1. Receiver not programmed.
2. Not enough voltage generated from the
thermocouple 1 within 20 seconds. Too
much resistance in the circuit.
fig. 6
1. Batteries are low.
1. Manual override knob is in MAN postion.
2. Valve turned down to pilot flow.
3. Low inlet pressure.
4. Damaged valve.
1. Wiring of thermocouple 2 is loose.
2. Wires of thermocouple 2 have been
cross-connected.
3. Short-circuit in the wiring of
th ermocouple 2.
4. Broken wire in the wiring of
thermocouple 2.
5. Thermocouple 2 is dirty.
6. Thermocouple 2 is not positioned
correctly in the flame
(see fig. 7)
7. Thermocouple 2 is defective.
8. Receiver is defective.

REMEDY:
1. Replace thermocouple.
2. Confirm regulator pressure, and sizing.
Replace if necessary.
3. Replace the valve. Over tightening the
thermocouple interrupter will damage the
safety magnet unit.
1. Replace receiver and reprogram code
(remedy 1).
1. Remove battery from receiver.
Reinsert battery into receiver.
2. Use a digital multimeter set in the
mV range and measure the voltage by
connecting the test leads to the spade
connector. Spade connector is located
on the outer surface, directly beside the
magnet nut (see figure 6).
The available voltage must be at least 5mV
within first 20 seconds. It must not be
lower if the appliance is heated. A simple
check is to measure the drop time after
the appliance is heated. The Manufacturer
must specify the drop time for the
application.*
NOTE: Long tones during ignition indicate that
there are approximately 10 more ignitions prior to
changing of batteries.
1. Replace batteries.
* To find out which part of the circuit is causing the
problem, a checklist for each application can be
prepared using an excel calculation form available
from Mertik Maxitrol.
1. Turn Manual override knob to ON
position (see figure 4).
2. Turn flame to high fire by pressing up
button on remote handset.
3. Confirm regulator pressure, and sizing.
Replace valve if necesary.
4. Replace valve.
1. Connect the wiring properly.
2. Connect the wiring properly.
3. Replace wiring.
4. Replace wiring.
5. Clean the thermocouple.
6. P osition the thermocouple correctly in
the flame.
7. Check the voltage across thermocouple 2
just before the main burner goes out.
If the voltage is lower than 1.8 mV, replace
thermocouple 2.
8. Check the voltage across thermocouple 2
just before the main burner goes out.
If the voltage is higher than 1.8 mV, replace
the receiver.
