CD-ROM : This is a read only CD (it cannot be written to).
CD-R :
This is a CD that can be written to only once. It is not possible to delete or change data once it has
been recorded. Depending on the writing mode used, it may be possible to carry out subsequent,
additional recording to remaining space on the disc.
CD-RW :
It is possible to delete all the data recorded or just the previous session and then write again or
change the data on this kind of CD.
Compatible Formats for CDs
CD-DA (Music CD) : This is the format for music CDs.
CD-ROM Mode 1 :
This is the format for recording digital data.
CD-ROM XA Mode2 : This format is adapted to multimedia and supports the recording of data, sound and
image data all together.
CD-Extra :
This format supports the recording of audio data and data recorded in XA Mode 2 onto
the same CD in different sessions.
CD TEXT : This format allows album titles and song names to be recorded in written form onto music CDs.
Photo CD : This is a format developed by Kodak which allows photographic image data to be recorded on CD-
ROM and played back on domestic television or used on computers.
Video CD : This indicates a type of CD or format which compresses movies and other moving pictures in
MPEG1.
CD-R/RW Disc Writing Format
Disc At Once :
This format records all the data onto a single disc in one go. It is not possible to write
additional data to the disc afterwards.
Track At Once :
This format records data track by track. As long as there is space remaining on the disc,
additional recordings may be carried out up to a maximum of 99 times.
Session At Once : This format records data in sessions (Read in + Data + Readout).
Multi Session :
This format allows multiple recordings of the base unit of recording, "sessions". Each ses-
sion is composed of a "Read in", indicating the beginning of recording, the data body, and
the "Readout", indicating the completion of recording.
Packet Write :
This format breaks the data down into small elements known as "packets" for recording.
Software that records using packet writing format is called packet writing software. Using
this software allows you to record files onto disc in the same way as you do with a hard
disk.
