3.2 IMPORTANT INDICATIONS

PATIENT SELECTION
Conscious sedation with nitrous oxide is recommended for all patients who visit the dentist with
discomfort or fear, as it allows them to experience the treatment in a relaxed manner.
- Scared, frightened patients
- Patients with a strong gag reflex
- Patients in whom insufficient local anaesthesia can be achieved
- Cooperative children in need of long and extensive treatment
- Children with limited cooperation but less need for treatment
CONSCIOUS SEDATION IS NOT INDICATED FOR PATIENTS:
- IN PREGNANCY
(even dental office employees cannot be exposed to nitrous oxide)
- IN DRUG-ADDICTED PATIENTS
- IN THE PRESENCE OF SEVERE PULMONARY INFECTIONS
- SEVERE MENTAL OR BEHAVIOURAL AND PERSONALITY DISORDERS
- PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS IN NASAL BREATHING (RHINITIS, SINUSITIS)
- REDUCED COMMUNICATION SKILLS
- DISTURBANCE OF MIDDLE EAR VENTILATION
- SERIOUS SYSTEMIC DISEASES (SM, ILEUM)
- HISTORY OF SURGERY WITH INTRAOCULAR GAS INJECTION
- PATIENTS WITH ANESTHESIOLOGICAL EVALUATION EQUAL TO OR ABOVE 3 (See table below)
- VITAMIN B12 AND FOLIC ACID DEFICIENCY OR RELATED DISORDERS
