13. Troubleshooting

WARNING: turn switch off and always remove plug from the power source before trouble shooting.
Trouble
Quill returns too slowy or too quickly
Chuck wiII not stay attached to spindle. It
wiII falls off when trying to install.
Noisy operation
Wood splinters on underside.
Workpiece tom loose from hand.
Drill bit bums.
Drill leads off...hole not round.
Drill bit binds in workpiece.
Excessive drill bit run- out or wobble.

Problem
Spring has improper tension
Dirt, grease or oil on the tapered inside
surface of the chuck or on the spindle's
tapered surface.
1. Incorrect belt tension
2. Dry spindle.
3. Loose spindle pulley
4. loose motor pulley.
No "backup material" behind workpiece.
Not supported or clamped proper1y.
1. Incorrect speed.
2. Chips not coming out of hole.
3. Dull drill bit
4. Feeding too slowy
1. Hard grain in wood or lengths of cutting lips
and/or angle not equal
2. Bent drill bit.
1. Workpiece pinching drill bit or excessive
feed pressure.
2. Improper belt tension.
1. Bent drill bit
2. Wom spindle bearings
3. Drill bit not properly installed in chuck.
4. Chuck not properly installed.
Remedy
Adjust spring tension. See "Quill return
spring".
Using household detergent, clean the
tapered suffaces af chuck and spindle
ta remave all dirt, grease and oil. See
"Installing the chuck".
1. Adjust belt tension. See "Choosing
speed and belt tensioning".
2. Lublicate spindle. See "Lublication"
3. Check tightness of retaining nut on
pulley, and tighten if necessary
4. Tighten set screw in motor pulley
Use "backup material". See "Positioning
table and workpiece".
Support workpiece or clamp it. See
"Positioning table and workpiece".
1. Change speed. See "Choosing speed
and belt tensioning".
2. Retract drill bit frequently to remave
chips.
3. Resharpen drill bit.
4. Feed fast enaugh ta allow drill bit to cut.
1. Resharpen drill bit correctly.
2. Replace drill bit.
1. Suppar1 workpiece ar clamp it. See
"Positioning table and workpiece".
2. Adjust belt tension. See "Choosing
speed and belt tensioning".
1. Use a straight drill bit.
2. Replace bearings.
3. Install drill properly. See "Installing drill
bits".
4. Install chuck properly. See "Installing
the chuck".
