1. Introduction

1.1 Scope

This Instructional Manual provides instructions about first installation and maintenance of the Unity 2 system.
It includes all necessary technical information and lists the spare parts, accessories and consumer materials available
for Unity 2 system.
The describtion of the graphical user interface of the Unity Software is not part of this instruction manual but is
described in the Software Reference Manual and in the Software Short Guide available on the Installation CD as
a PDF document.

1.2 Instrument use

The Unity 2 system is intended to be used to diagnose the hearing loss of a third person (patient), for fitting and
adjusting hearing instruments to that person using Real Ear Measurements and test the performance of hearing
instruments with the hearing instrument analyzer using a coupler in a test box chamber.
The Unity 2 system must only be used by staff trained with the appropriate audiological skills. The hints and warnings
provided in this manual must be considered in order to use the instrument safely.
The instrument usage is limited to regular office environments or rooms specifically designed for acoustical
measurements.

1.3 Main operational functions

The installation of the system and insertion of the Control Unit into the Docking Station and how to turn on/off
the system is described in section 4.3.1. All other operational functions are software based and descriped in the Unity
applicational software short guide, which is available as a PDF copy from the Unity Installation CD.

1.4 When not to use the Unity 2 system?

Real Ear Measurements requires the insertion of probe tubes into the ear canal. Do not use Real Ear Measurement with
patients who have an injured or perforated eardrum. Always inspect ear canal before inserting the probe tube.
Caution: Always inspect the ear canal to ensure it is freely accessible and identify any contradictional
injuries of the ear drum before inserting probe tubes into the ear canal.

1.5 Service and maintenance

There are no serviceable parts inside the instrument. Unauthorized opening of the housing will void warranty.
Maintainance and repair of the system is only allowed by Siemens certified service.
The Unity 2 system shall be re-calibrated annually by a certified Audiometer Service. In case no Audiometer Service
is known or available, please contact your local Siemens Technical Service or representative using the contact details
provided in section 12 of this manual.
