Important: The indication should be checked again at the end of the drainage­free period via
ultrasound before removing the catheter.
Example Procedure for Catheter removal:
1.
Check the coagulation parameters
2.
Prepare a sterile workspace
3.
Position the patient to allow easy access to the catheter
4.
Infiltrate the skin around the catheter exit site with a generous amount of local anesthetic (ob­
serve application time)
5.
Externally feel for the polyester cuff (bulge­like thickening)

Incision in the skin directly at the catheter exit site

blunt, circular freeing of the polyester cuff using the irrigation cannula, dissecting scissors or
similar instrument, (the catheter will adhere to the subcutaneous tissue only at the cuff, difficult
conditions can arise when removing the catheter either due to the position itself or the walls of
the tumor)
8.
Use one hand to carefully apply pressure to the subcutaneous tunnel and use the other hand
to pull out the catheter. If the catheter as a whole cannot be mobilised it might be necessary to
make an additional incision (corresponding to the length, at the end of the tunnel/ using the
incision at the puncture site as a guide) in order to recover the part of the catheter that is buried.

Subsequent closure of the incision(s) with skin sutures
