drainova® Catheter Kit / d rainova® ArgentiC Catheter Kit
The drainova® Catheter Kit and drainova® ArgentiC Catheter Kit contain all components required for
the implantation of a drainova® Catheter / drainova® ArgentiC Catheter used in cases of recurring,
therapy resistant, malignant and nonmalignant effusions in serous body cavities.
Drainage of the accumulated fluid provides relief from symptoms arising from an effusion.
Medical Indication
The use of the catheter is indicated in the following circumstances:
•
Malignant pleural effusion
•
Nonmalignant pleural effusion (e. g. heart failure)
en
•
Malignant ascites
•
Nonmalignant ascites (e. g. liver failure)
Contraindication
The use of the catheter is contraindicated in the following circumstances:
•
The body cavity has several chambers (septa), indicating that no alleviation of dyspnoea, or
other symptoms is to be expected after drainage.
•
Coagulopathy
•
Infection in the body cavity (e. g. pleuritis / p eritonitis)
•
Lymphatic effusion
•
Shift of the mediastinum by more than 2 c m to the ipsilateral side of the pleural effusion
•
In case of allergy to the materials used in the product
The drainova® Catheter
The catheter is made of biocompatible silicone and is 66 c m in length. It has a diameter of 15,5 F r. The
catheter is perforated with oppositefacing holes running from one end for a length of 26 c m. This part
will be implanted and the openings ensure the inlet of fluid in the catheter. On the end that will not be
implanted, the catheter is equipped with a safety valve. There is a polyester cuff between the perfora
ted side and the safety valve, which serves to adhere the catheter to the skin tissue in the subcutan
eous tunnel. The cuff additionally prevents germs entering after implantation. The safety valve closes
automatically when disconnected, preventing air from entering the catheter as well as preventing
effusion leakage. The safety valve should only be opened with the speciallydeveloped access tip. An
Xray contrast radiopaque bariumsulfatestrip runs along the entire lenth of the catheter.
