lengthof the openingon the top surfaceof the joistas shownon
Figure8. Do not cutthejoistas marked.
B- Ifthechosenlocationisperpendicular t o theceilingjoists, m ark
the width of the openingon the top surfaceof the joistas shown
on Figure9. Do not cutthejoistas marked.
STEP 2.
Cut 2 piecesof board similarto the size of the ceiling ioist,long
enoughto nail themto theceiling ioistson bothendsof theopen-
ing (Figure10). Theseboards will provide support to joistswhich
will be cut out.
STEP 3
n Positio theseboardsapproximately2 ft from the openingedge
(Figure10).

STEP 4
Nextdecidewhereyouwill cutthe joistseeFigure II. Thecutting
lineshouldbe away fromtheactualopeningtwicethethickness o f
theframe(usually3 inches).This will allow to installdoublehead-
ersat both endsof the ioist(Figure17,Page8).
Inolder homes thethickness o f thejoistmightbe greaterthanwhat
is currentlysold in lumberyards. In such case the cuttingline
should be marked at twice the thicknesses of the material which
you will useto buildthe framenotthe joist.
STEP 5
Cut the joist carefully, w atchingnot to cutthe ceiling board and
makingsurethatthe cutout joistis evenand vertical(square).
