general PrecautiOns
Please read this information regarding general
i
precautions. Even experienced operators can
make a mistake.
dO:
Make sure the surface is clean and free of oil, dust, dirt and
debris.
Make sure the surface is dry and the roadway temperature
is above 50ºF (10ºC).
Make sure the thermoplastic is hot enough to bond to
the road surface, 390ºF minimum (199ºC).
temperature and humidity have an effect on the required
application temperature of the material. In necessary,
install a test line, wait for it to set and test for asphalt
penetration bond.
Make sure that if sealer (concrete applications) is required,
it is approved by the manufacturer of the thermoplastic
and is compatible with the material being used.
Make sure that the sealer is dry before thermoplastic
application, and that sealer has not been applied more
than 24 hours previously.
Make sure you are using the proper size application die,
and that the die is not worn or damaged (check carbine
runners).
Make sure that the die burner (infrared) is keeping the die
hot enough so that the actual installation temperature is
above 390ºF (199ºC).
Material temperature will fall during transfer
i
from the holding tank to the application die.
Make sure your equipment is operating properly to get the
best results.
Agitate thermoplastic on a regular basis, approximately
every three to four minutes for 400ºF (204ºC) thermoplastic,
more frequently for hotter material.
dOn't:
Never install thermoplastic lnies over existing lines that
have numerous layers of flaking or peeling paint (install
only if paint is thin or almost worn off).
Never install thermalplastic lines over longitudinal joints.
Whenever possible, or on an as-needed basis, clean all
joints with compressed air.
Wind, air
Never install thermoplastic on a damp or dirty road surface.
Never install thermoplastic over reflective drop-on beads.
When applying over a fresh thermoplastic line, brush all
loose beads off-line first (Example: continuation after tank
refill).
When using stencils, never allow the anti-stick product to
come in contact with the road surface. Thermoplastic will
not bond to the surface.
Never substitute spray thermoplastic formulas for extrude
formulas.
Never mix hydrocarbon thermoplastic with alkyd
thermoplastic.
Never leave a hot application machine unattended.
