This section is intended to be followed by new
i
and inexperienced users of thermoplastic line
marking equipment.
Before you attempt to melt and install
thermoplastic, practice the exercises found in
this section to help you understand the function
of this equipment. Do not use thermoplastic or
glass beads at this point.
Always set the parking brake when the applicator
i
is idle. Engage the parking brake by pulling up
on the brake lever and set on STOP to lock. Be
sure the brake is set by trying to push the unit.
With a new applicator the material valve can be
opened and closed freely since no thermoplastic
has been introduced to the valve.
Install a clean new die that can be opened and closed freely,
and practice the following steps:
1. Adjust the push handle up or down for optimal comfort.
2. Using the die lever (inside right handle), lower the die to
the road surface, then fully engage the lever to the vertical
position thereby opening the die.
3. On a clean, level surface, begin pushing the applicator,
taking note that the bead dispenser drive wheel is turning
and that the die is gliding freely on the road surface.
4. After approximately 20-30 feet of movement, retract the
die lever (inside right lever) until the die closes, but do
not latch the lever.
5. Continue pushing the applicator, taking note that the
bead dispenser is still turning. Upon verification that the
bead dispenser is still turning, retract and latch the die
lever (inside right lever).
6. Fill the dispenser with clean, dry beads, and repeat the
above steps, applying beads only.
7. While pushing the machine, practice opening and closing
the material valve (outside right lever), leaving the valve
open for 3-4 seconds. Repeat at 15-second intervals as if
you were applying thermoplastic on the road surface and
filling the depleting die with thermoplastic from the kettle.
8. After completing this exercise, lower and position the
pointer to the road surface. Snap a straight chalk-line
about 20 feet long. Observe the pointer and try to follow
the line as closely as possible, using only your hip to push
the applicator and your hands on the control levers.

When operating this system, it is a good idea to
i
have a second person to assist. It takes a little
practice to coordinate the opening and closing
of both the material valve and die while pushing
the applicator and following a chalk-line. The
person assisting can open and close the material
valve while the main operator can concentrate
on the remaining tasks.
One
person
comfortably, but it takes practice. Repetition will
build confidence, and confidence will make the
process easier for the user.
You are now ready to try these exercises with hot thermoplastic,
but first read ahead to familiarize yourself with other procedures
related to the operation of this equipment.
When performing the above operations with
hot thermoplastic, be aware that the marking
will remain hot for at least 30 seconds after
application. Do not step on the marking.
