Operation

5.1

Preparing the battery test

!
If performing the battery test in a vehicle, ensure
that
$
all additional loads are deactivated,
$
the key is not in the ignition,
$
all doors are closed,
$
the measurement is performed directly at the
poles.
i
Before connecting the BAT 115, clean the battery
poles with a wire brush and a mixture of baking
soda and water.
If the battery is not a sealed maintenance-free type,
refill each cell with distilled water. Do not overfill
the battery cells.
5.2

Connecting the BAT 115

i
For a proper connection, rock the battery clamps
back and forth. Both sides of each battery clamp
must have a secure connection to the battery pole
before performing the test. A poor connection
will result in the error message
this message appears, clean the battery poles and
reconnect the battery clamps.
i
When connecting to a battery placed in the trunk
or passenger compartment of the vehicle, the
battery poles there and not the starting aid contact
points in the engine compartment should be used
because the resistance of the lines laid in the
vehicle would influence the measured value.
i
Always connect directly to the battery poles of the
battery to be tested.
1. Connect the red clamp directly to the positive
pole (+).
2. Connect the black clamp directly to the negative
pole (-).
5.3

Battery test

During the battery test, the starting capacity of the
battery is tested with 6 V and 12 V starter batteries
depending on the state of charge.
1. Connect BAT 115 to the vehicle battery to be tested.
2. Select BATTERY TEST with
with E.

i
The test standard is indicated after the cold start
current on the battery label.
i
If several pieces of information are provided on the
battery, please select regional standards such as
EN or SAE.
i
The IEC standard 60095-1 was revised in 2018 and
gives battery manufacturers the choice to base
battery starting performance on either SAE or EN.
Therefore three different IEC selection options are
listed under "BATTERY TYPE:":
IEC for batteries for which no additional SAE or EN
value is specified (usually until 2018),
IEC (=EN) for IEC batteries if the cold start current
is identical according to IEC and EN,
IEC (=SAE) for IEC batteries if the cold start
current is identical according to IEC and SAE.
i
When testing AGM batteries in vehicles with 12 V
recuperation systems, "
may occur more often without the need for external
battery recharging.
