Test load procedure for certification of 3.5 Series wood stove using
ASTM E3053-17 according to EPA Alt-127
Low burn rate
Stove lighting: 14.1 lbs
Split the start-up fuel log into 8 pieces. Crisscross the 8 pieces on the brick, leaving some space between
each wood pieces (3 in the bottom, 3 in the middle and 2 on the top). Crisscross the kindling on the top of
the start-up fuel. The kindling is made of between 14-16 finly split piece of wood that are 10% of moisture
content. Place crumbled newspaper on top of the kindling (5 full sheets). Light up the paper and let the
door ajar at 90° until the flue temperature reaches 170°F, then close the door. The fan is always OFF.
Pre-load (high burn): 29 lbs
When there is coal bed of 3.3 lb left, break ashes and level coal bed, then add pre-load in an East-West
configuration divided in 3 columns: 2 smallest logs in the back, 2 logs in the middle and 2 logs in the front.
Leave one inch or air space between the rear bricks and the first column, another one inch between the
first two columns, and finally leave no space between the second and the third column. Let the door ajar
to leave a space of one inch on the door handle's side for 3 minutes (including loading time). Close the
door and let burn until the weight is down to target.
When the average stove temperature gets to 355°F, slightly level the coal bed. Let the door ajar by one
inch for one minute. There should be approximately 4.5 to 4.6 lb of coal bed and the average temperature
should be around 350°F.
Loading: 34 lbs
For the loading, put 2 logs at the back, 2 in the center and 2 in the front. The distance between the logs
and the rear brick shall be approximately 1 inch. There should be one inch of air space between all the
columns. Let the door ajar for 6 minutes 20 seconds and then close the door with the primary air control
open. When the oxygen falls below 7.5% and the CO increase above 3500ppm, close the primary air
control by introducing a ½" cylinder into the primary air intake. Remove the cylinder. Close the primary air
control completely at 16 minutes 20 seconds or when 15% of the load weight has been consumed,
whichever comes first. Start the fan at minimum speed at 30 minutes.
Medium burn rate
Stove lighting: 14.1 lbs
Use the same method than for low burn rate.
Pre-load (high burn): 29 lbs
Use the same method than for low burn rate.
