OPERATION

Read and understand the warnings in the Safety
i
Precautions section at the front of this manual
before operating this equipment.
The equipment has been pre-adjusted at the
i
factory. However, adjustments may need to be
made.
3.1

LIGHTING PRE-MELTER KETTLE BURNER

1. Turn thermostat and pilot light valve knob to "OFF"
position.
2. Turn main Liquid Propane (LP) gas tank valves to "ON"
position.
3. Turn pilot light valve to "ON" position.
4. Open burner access door located below material discharge
valve. Use chain and latch behind discharge valve to hold
access door open.
5. Depress and hold down RED pilot button. Depress ignition
valve button to generate spark to light the pilot. Keep RED
pilot light button depressed for 60 seconds.
Explosion hazard. If pilot fails to light and/or stay
lit, wait at least 5 minutes to give propane time to
clear before attempting to light the pilot again.
6. Once the pilot is lit, close the burner door.
7. Allow pilot flame to stabilize for a few minutes.
8. With the burner door closed, raise the thermostat to 350ºF
(177ºC).
9. Load kettle with 150-300 lbs of material, depending upon
the kettle size (approximately 1/4 full).
10. When material temperature gauge approaches 350ºF
(177ºC), reset the temperature setting above 400ºF (205ºC)
to as high as 450ºF (232ºC), depending upon weather
conditions and quality of material being inserted into the
kettle.
11. Once the oil temperature exceeds 400ºF (205ºC), begin
feeding thermoplastic into the kettle.
3.2

THERMOPLASTIC MATERIAL FEED

1. Make sure the material discharge valve (slide gate) is
closed.
2. Practice timing the feeding of the granulated bags or
hand-sized chunks for block thermoplastic into the kettle.
Once molten, add more material.
3. When material temperature gauge approaches 350ºF
(177ºC) and the material is molten, turn on the engine
(see "Engine Operation", section 3.3) and begin agitating
material.
TIPS
Material should be heated between 400 - 444ºF (205 -
227ºC). On cooler working days, higher temperatures may
be required.
Occasionally, insert a long stem thermometer in
thermoplastic to check the calibration of the kettle material
temperature gauge.
The higher the volume of molten material in kettle,
the quicker fresh cold material will achieve working
temperature.
During non-working or extensive travel time, reduce
the temperature of the material. Although heat stable,
thermoplastic material should not be held for more than 4
hours at or near its application temperature without being
used.
Constantly turn over material by adding fresh material.
Read and understand "Standard Practices for Successful
Alkyd Hydrocarbon and Epoxy Thermoplastic Pavement
Markings".
3.3

ENGINE OPERATION

1. Open the throttle approximately 1/3 of the way.
2. Hydraulic selector valve should be in neutral position
during the engine starting cycle.
3. Prime the engine by depressing push button on the
engine regulator.
4. Press engine ignition button to start engine.
5. Let engine warm up a few minutes, then push hydraulic
selector valve forward to engage the material agitation
blades.
6. Open the material feed door and check for movement
of paddles. If no movement, material has not liquefied
sufficiently. Return selector valve to neutral until material
melts.
