THERMOMARK
5.4

APPLYING MATERIAL

1. Check to see that the material valve is completely closed.
2. Transfer only the amount of thermoplastic you intend to
use into the kettle. Make this transfer within 15 minutes
of lighting the burners. Always close and latch the kettle
doors after filling.
Wear personal protective equipment including
heat
resistant
thermoplastic.
Use existing equipment handles when filling
with thermoplastic for ease of use.
The outer surface of the holding tank will become
hot while heating thermoplastic. Avoid direct
contact with the surface.
Always screen molten thermoplastic when

and keep the top of the unit scraped clean of
inadvertent spillage.
3. If using the machine to melt thermoplastic, wait for the
product to reach 410ºF (210ºC) before attempting to
continue.
4. Fill the application die by operating the material valve
lever (outside right lever).
When filling the die with material, NEVER allow it
to overflow.
Attention
5. Apply the material as desired to the surface, using the
controls as illustrated in section 4.4.
6. Agitate the material often by using the agitator (left lever).
Thermoplastic beads can settle to the bottom of the kettle,
causing an inadvertent layer of insulation that will result in
inefficient heating.
Thermoplastic does not need agitation under
i
300ºF (149ºC). However, agitation is required to
begin 325ºF (162ºC) and increase in frequency to
about every 3-5 minutes at 420ºF (215ºC).
7. Always use the thermoplastic in this equipment within 30
minutes, or drain it and recycle it into a larger melter.

Never overfill the applicator,
8. Do not allow this unit to cool with a full kettle of material
and try and drain as much material from the kettle as
possible prior to shutting down. It is recommended to
clean out the material pipe (the pipe running between the
kettle and the die) with a piece of 3/4" hydraulic hose.
Never leave the flame on if the material tank is
empty. It is when this is allowed to happen that
overheating and material flash is most possible.
