REVERSING GEAR
MALFUNCTIONS
A - Reverser slippage
The engine speed rises and does
not drive the propeller shaft
B - Reverser motion correct. No for­
ward motion
C - Correct motion. No reverse mo
ti on
D - The propel Jer shaft rotates in one
direction or in the other but the ship
does not advance
E - No forward nor reverse motion
despite normal operation of the

CAUSES
Before anything else check that
a} The shafline stuffing box (pac­
king gland) is tight
b) The p ropel !er turns freely
1 ) The shafting boss is not tighten
2) No oil in the reverse
3) Wear or begi " n ing of seizin g of both
male and female cones
4) Poor adjustment of the forward or
reverse gear stop

Insufficient travel of control ca­
bles or clutch lever
2) Failure of forward motion pinions
3) Poor adjustment of the forward
gear stop
