Multi-Clamp Suction Plate Operating Instructions
1.1

Safety information

General safety notes

 These operating instructions contain important
information on using the Multi-Clamp suction
plate. Please read the operating instructions
thoroughly and keep them for later reference.
 The Multi-Clamp suction plate may only be
connected and commissioned after the operating
instructions have been read and fully understood.
 In addition to these operating instructions,
instructions must also be provided in terms of the
German "Health and Safety at Work Act"
[Arbeitsschutzgesetz]
and
"Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health"
[Arbeitsmittelbenutzungsverordnung].
 General
safety
regulations
standards, including those set by the machine
manufacturers, must be observed and adhered
to.
 Installation may only be carried out by qualified
specialist personnel.
 Sudden vacuum failure may lead to hazardous
situations.
 The Multi-Clamp suction plate may only be used
for the purpose for which it was intended.
 The Multi-Clamp suction plate may only be
operated in a sound, fully-functional condition.
 Devices using compressed air can cause harm to
people and damage property.

Intended use

 The Multi-Clamp suction plate is used for
clamping
flat
workpieces
processing. The Multi-Clamp suction plate can
either be attached mechanically or by means of a
vacuum.
 In exceptional cases, the Multi-Clamp suction
plate can also be used on machining centre
tables (CNC-controlled machines and systems).
 Suitable safety equipment on the machine or
system is a prerequisite for operating the Multi-
Clamp suction plate.
 The Multi-Clamp suction plate is designed for
clamping by means of a vacuum. However, it is
only suitable for clamping flat workpieces where
the contact surface must be two-dimensional in
design.
 The clamping of highly porous or uneven
workpieces can lead to a reduction of its intended
function and must be checked by specialist
personnel.
 Air or other neutral gases as per ISO 8573-1 are
approved as media to be evacuated.
 It is not permitted to apply suction to liquids,
corrosive gases or granulates.
 An appropriate filter must be used in cases of
heavy soiling.
1.2

Initial startup

 Ensure that the suction plate is assembled
according to the description.
 Place the suction plate on as even and smooth a
surface as possible.
 If no work surface with a suction-tight surface is
available, seal the hole in the middle of the
suction plate (item 4) with some adhesive or
silicone paste and secure the suction plate to the
work surface mechanically (using screws, etc.).
 Connect
the
supplied
hose
compressed air supply (VC-M-SP) or vacuum
generator (VC-M-SPV).
 If you wish to connect several suction plates, use
the

VC-M

accessory
10.01.12.02061 and see also Section 1.7).
 Connect the hose set to your Multi-Clamp suction
plate.
 The Multi-Clamp suction plate is now ready for
use.

Function and application

The Multi-Clamp suction plate is a plate made from
plastic. It is placed onto and secured to clean
surfaces or the Multi-Base turn/swivel fixture (see
page 3). Compressed air (VC-M-SP) or vacuum
(VC-M-SPV) is connected to item [2] using the
supplied hose.
Caution: Check that the Multi-Clamp suction plate is
attached
vacuum/compressed air. Ensure that the seal is not
positioned above the workpiece.
Depending on the workpiece, the sealing cord [1]
can be optionally inserted into the grooves of the
Multi-Clamp suction plate. Be sure to choose the
largest suction surface possible, in order to generate
as much holding power as possible.
Caution: Do not close the vacuum vent or dirt sieve
[6]. Remove any dirt.
Caution: Reducing the vacuum area also leads to a
reduction in the clamping force.
When using the Multi-Clamp suction plate on a non-
suction-tight surface, the hole (item 4) must be
sealed. This hole supplies the vacuum to the
underside of the plate and would cause the
operating vacuum to fail in the case of a leak. In
order to seal it, use silicone or another suction-tight
material. If this is done, the plate must be fixed to
the work surface mechanically (screws, etc.).
The surface of the working area must be as clean
and even as possible. Ensure that the Multi-Clamp
suction plate is securely fixed to the work surface.
Before processing, ensure that the operating
set
to
your
vacuum (normally -0.7 to -0.9 bar) has been
established. This generates the clamping force that
secures the workpiece. When using Multi-Clamp
suction plate VC-M-SP with integrated vacuum
set
(item

generation, you must consider the specifications
regarding optimum operating pressure. A higher
operating pressure results in a lower vacuum level.
A hazardous situation may arise if processing
begins before the operating vacuum is established.

Clamping a workpiece

 Check the entire clamping system for visible
damage and soiling and deal with any problems
immediately.
 Check the available clamping area and the secure
positioning of the workpiece, both visually and
manually. It must not be possible for the
workpiece to move or detach unless extreme
force is applied.
 The generated machining forces must not exceed
the available clamping forces. In case of doubt,
select low operating parameters and gradually
maximize.

Troubleshooting

Problem: No vacuum
• Check the connections.
• Check the whole system for leaks.
• Check the position of the sealing cord.
• Check the sieve on the vacuum vent for dirt and
clean if necessary.
• Knot holes in the workpiece can cause leaks.
• Porous workpieces are difficult to pick up (MDF
sheets, etc.).
• Ensure that the vacuum supply is secure, check
compressed air or vacuum generator.
