6.2 Electrical connection

The charge input is protected against static discharge (ground insulation) and
can have a max. potential difference of 10 V (related to the output or supply
voltage).

6.2.1 Connecting the sensors

One sensor can be connected to the charge amplifier CMD600.
Note the following information:
• Due to the very high input insulation of the charge amplifier, the signal or
charge input must be protected against contamination. Insulation is
reduced by moisture and contamination, this can lead to increased drift.
Where necessary, clean the plug connection with a clean, lint-free paper
cloth and benzine (see chapter 11.3 "Information about the charge
amplifier and electrical connection").
• We recommend the use of high-insulation, low-noise cables from the HBM
range (1−KAB143−3). These have been tested for high insulation
resistance, low noise and small interference charges during movement.
• If the cable is moved during operation, it should not be mounted freely
suspended for lengths more than 30−50 cm.
• Where possible, short-circuit the sensor before connection as piezoelectric
sensors can generate high voltages. These can damage the charge
amplifier.
• Connect the sensor cable to the BNC socket of the CMD600.
• In order to connect the sensor with the 1−KAB143−3 cable to the BNC
socket, you will also need the sensor adapter 1−CON−P3001.
Ground looping
Ground loops are frequent sources of errors in the measurement signal. They
are generally seen as a superimposed 50 or 100 Hz voltage. The cause often
is because the sensors are not just connected via the cable with the ground
potentials of the amplifier, but also via the enclosure at the measurement
point. This can be remedied by mounting the sensors insulated:
• Connect the device enclosure and the sensor with e.g. an extensive copper
mesh or flat cable (low impedance, low inductance)
In general, cable lengths over 10 m are not recommended for the charge
input.
