Electrical installation

(Only for a capstan with electric motor)
Check whether the voltage, indicated on the motor serial num-
ber plate, is the same as the voltage on board.
Battery
Use a starting battery with a capacity of around 70 Ah – 12 V
(e.g. a VETUS 70 Ah maintenance free ship's battery).
For 24 V, use two starting batteries of around 35 Ah – 12 V
connected in series (e.g. 2 of VETUS' 55 Ah maintenance free
ship's batteries).
Fit the battery or batteries as close as possible to the capstan;
the main supply cables can then be short, so that the voltage
drop remains low.
The place where the battery (batteries) is/are sited must be dry
and well-ventilated.
Main supply cables
The minimum core diameter is 25 mm². For 24 V, at least 10 mm².
The voltage drop between battery and capstan should not
exceed 5% of the supply voltage.
See table on p. 15 to select a suitable core diameter.
If applicable, use cable of core diameter 25 mm² (at 12 V) or 10
mm² (at 24 V) for the last length of cable between motor and
relay.
A main switch and a fuse must be installed in the + cable. A
VETUS battery switch is a most suitable switch. The fuse pro-
tects the capstan against overloading and, at the same time, the
on-board wiring against short circuits.
A VETUS slow-blow fuse is recommended.

- 24 V capstan: 50 A, VETUS part no: ZE050.

Switch or relay
The capstan motor must be controlled by a switch or relay with
switch contacts suitable for the motor current.
If the motor is only required to turn in one direction, a relay with
one 'normally open' contact is sufficient.
If the motor is required to turn in each direction, two relays, each
with a single 'normally open' contact, should be used.
Connect the motor and relay according to the diagram on p. 14.
Fit the relay as close as possible to the capstan.
For 'one rotation direction' we can supply: a remote control
consisting of:
- 1 relay, single pole, 'normally open'
- 12 V system, VETUS part no: AFST1512S or SOL1512S
- 24 V system, VETUS part no: AFST324S or SOL324S
For 'two rotation directions' two of the remote controls speci-
fied under 'one rotation direction' can be used.
A hand-held remote control unit with spiral flex can also be sup-
plied for use in combination with the above relays.
