15 During Operation

To test the switch lever:
► Insert the activation key.
► Unlock the retaining latch by pushing it forward with your
thumb.
► Hold the retaining latch in the unlocked position.
► Depress the trigger switch lockout and the trigger switch
only. Do not depress the switch lever.
The cutting blades should not start moving. If they do start
moving, take the hedge trimmer to an authorized STIHL
servicing dealer to be repaired before use.
► Next, hold the hedge trimmer firmly with both hands, your
fingers wrapped tightly around the handles. Now switch on
the hedge trimmer by depressing the trigger switch
lockout, the trigger switch and the switch lever
momentarily. The blades should start moving. Then
release the trigger switch or switch lever. The blades
should stop moving.
If the cutting blades do not start when you depress the
trigger switch and switch lever, or if the do not stop after you
release the trigger switch or switch lever, remove the
activation key and take the hedge trimmer to an authorized
STIHL servicing dealer to be repaired before use.
15 During Operation

15.1 Using the Hedge Trimmer

WARNING
To avoid serious or fatal injury, avoid contact with the
moving cutting blades. Never hold the material to be cut or
attempt to remove cut material without first releasing the
trigger switch and removing the activation key. Release the
trigger switch and remove the activation key before clearing
jammed material, @ 6.4.

WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury, never work with the
hedge trimmer in the rain or in wet or damp conditions,
@ 6.3. Always wear proper clothing and protective apparel,
including proper eye protection, @ 6.6.2. Work carefully
and maintain proper control of the hedge trimmer, @ 6.6.2.
The hedge trimmer is designed for two-handed operation.
► Before starting work with the hedge trimmer, remove thick
branches with a hand pruning saw, loppers, chain saw or
other appropriate tool.
► Do not cut stems, branches or other vegetation greater
than 0.32 in. (8 mm) thick.
Cutting in a Vertical Plane
► Swing the cutting attachment from the bottom of the hedge
upwards in a controlled arc (see illustration above).
► Lower the nose of the cutting attachment, move along the
hedge and swing the cutting attachment up again in a
controlled arc.
Cutting in a Horizontal Plane
► Hold the cutting attachment at an angle of 0° to 10° as you
move the cutting attachment horizontally, using both sides
of the cutting attachment (see illustration above).
If the hedge trimmer is used or stored at ambient
temperatures above 86 °F (30 °C), its runtime and
performance may be reduced.
Observe all applicable laws, regulations, standards and
ordinances.
