DEHORNING RECOMMENDATIONS
Performing this operation on young animals makes it easier to restrain and dehorn them and limits stress caused to the
animals. It is therefore recommended to perform dehorning before the age of 4 weeks for calves and before 2 weeks for kids.
Check with your veterinarian.
The idea of this device is to prevent horn growth by cauterizing blood vessels.
1. Immobilizing the calf or kid
Proper restraints should be applied. A moving animal will make it impossible to perform even cauterization around the horn
bud. A general and/or local anaesthetic may be used, in accordance with legislation in your country.
2. Shave around the horn bud before performing cauterization in order to:
- properly visualize the location of the horn bud,
- avoid getting fur in the wound, which can be a source of infection,
- properly visualise the quality of the cauterization.
3. Do not attempt to remove the horn bud
An even ring of cauterization will prevent horn bud growth.
4. Inspect the cauterization ring
Properly inspect the quality of this ring (it should be 4 to 5 mm deep, detached all the way around, and the white membrane
known as the periosteum should be visible). Partial regrowth of horns is often the result of imperfect work:
1 - Dehorning was performed too late. Make sure that you dehorn animals sufficiently early.
2 - The diameter of the dehorner tip was unsuitable and did not destroy all of the surrounding tissue.
Check that your tip is suitable for the type of dehorning planned. Change the tip if required.
3 - Not all of the veins were cauterized. It is therefore essential to check that the ring of cauterization around the horn bud
