The origin of contracture is a multitude of indications that can be given
by a doctor, among others:
Neurological indications:
• Apoplexy (CVA)
• Cerebral paresis
• Dystrophy
• Multiple sclerosis
• Paresis
• Myelomeningocele
• Skull and brain trauma
Contraindications
Structural contractures:
• Abnormal arthrokinematics
• Ankylosis
• Arthrodesis
General safety instructions
Risk of injury as a result of incorrect use; the professional should verify
correct functioning of the system joints prior to delivery of the orthotics
to the user. The patient and his/her carer(s) should also be instructed
how to put on the orthotics and have the joint operation explained to
them. It should also be made clear to them that the spring tension set-
ting should never be changed by anybody else than the professional or
therapist, unless the treating physician decides otherwise. The joints
should not come into contact with water. Furthermore, it is important
that the set force is set as low as possible without affecting the correc-
tive force.
Please note: the operating principle is not the higher the force the
faster the R.O.M. gain. On the contrary, excessive force can result in
retraction from muscle tissue or micro lesions in tissue.
