CUTTING CYLINDER ADJUSTMENT

To check that the cutting cylinder is set correctly to
the bottom blade:
(a) Hold a thin piece of paper between the edge of
the bottom blade and the spiral cutter and
revolve the cylinder manually.
(b) The paper should be cut cleanly along the
length of the bottom blade. If it is not, some
adjustment is necessary.
DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN
To adjust:
(a) Slacken the clamp pin locknuts (A).
(b) Turn the adjuster (B) anticlockwise (+) to move
the cylinder closer to the bottom blade. Make
1/8 of a turn alternately to each adjuster.
(c) Re-tighten the clamp nuts (A) securely, and
re-check the setting.
NOTE: The cutting cylinder setting should be checked
every four working hours. If after adjusting correctly
the paper is still not cut cleanly, then the cylinder and
bottom blade should be backlapped.
BACKLAPPING
The keen cutting edges of the spiral cutters can be
maintained by the process of backlapping. Proceed
as follows:
(a) Ensure that the cutting cylinder is set correctly
to the bottom blade (see page 42).
(b) Smear the cutting edges of the spiral cutters
with a medium grade of carborundum paste
(obtainable from most automobile service
stations or motor accessory shops).
(c) Seated on the tractor, start the engine and
move the drive control levers upwards to give
reverse drive to the cutting cylinders.
(d) Set engine speed to give a cylinder speed of
200 r.p.m.
(e) Continue backlapping until a thin piece of paper
can be cut cleanly along the length of the
bottom blade.
NOTE: It may be necessary to readjust the cutting
cylinder to the bottom blade.
(f) It is essential that all traces of carborundum
paste are removed from the cylinder and
bottom blade after backlapping, otherwise the
keen cutting edges will soon be lost when the
cylinders rotate normally for grass cutting.
