The measurement principle of the body water and fat scales
The body water and fat scales measures body water and fat by the principle of B.I.A., that is,
bioelectric impedance analysis. An imperceptible and completely safe and harmless current
measures the proportions of body tissues within seconds. Through this measurement of electri-
cal resistance (impedance), the percentage of fat and also the percentage of water in the body
can be determined. Muscle tissue and water have good electrical conductivity and thus low
resistance. Fat tissue, in contrast, has low conductivity, as the fat cells hardly conduct the cur-
rent because of their very high resistance.
Transparent electrodes integrated in the platform
New and innovative technologies allow transparent glass coatings to be manufactured that are
conductive at the same time. These act as electrodes for measuring body fat/body water in
BG75 and BG50 and in BG75 they also act as touch screen buttons.
The advantage of this technology is apparent in the design and cleaning is much easier com-
pared to conventional electrodes.
Weighing correctly
If possible, weigh yourself at the same time of day (ideally in the morning), after going to the
toilet, fasting and without clothes, in order to obtain comparable results.
Only the long-term trend counts. Short-term fluctuations in weight within a few days are
usually due only to loss of fluid. However, body water plays an important part in well-being.
The interpretation of the results depends on the changes in the
1. total weight
2. percentage of fat
3. percentage of water
and on the length of time over which these changes occur. Rapid changes over days should be
distinguished from medium-term changes (over weeks) and long-term changes (months).
As a basic rule, SHORT-TERM weight changes represent changes in water content almost exclu-
sively, while medium- and long-term changes can ALSO refer to the fat content.
• If the weight drops in the short-term but the proportion of body fat increases or remains the
same, you have only lost water, e.g. after a training session, going to the sauna or after a diet
limited only to rapid weight loss.
• If the weight increases in the medium term, while the proportion of body fat falls or remains
the same, you might have built up your muscle mass or there can be increased retention of
body water (e.g. as a result of taking medications or cardiac function becoming weaker in
elderly people)
• If weight and body fat proportion fall at the same time, your diet is working – you are losing
fat mass.
Medium-term changes in the proportion of body water can also be due to changes in muscle
mass.
