Problem

Possible cause
The measuring or reference
electrode is defective.
There is a problem with the wiring
to the controller.
The controller is defective.
An air bubble is caught at the end
of the electrode.
The electrode does not have a
good ground connection.
The glass bulb is defective.
There is interference from a
streaming potential.
The sample is cold and/or of low
ionic strength.
The electrode was not prepared
sufficiently.

Solution
Replace the defective electrode.
Examine the wiring from the electrode to the
controller. Make sure that there is a good
connection to the metal wires.
Replace the controller.
Adjust the electrode position so that air
bubbles do not get caught below the
electrode.
Refer to Connect the protective earth ground
on page 6.
Replace the electrode.
Connect a protective earth ground to the
solution near the electrode. A solution ground
is most important in high purity water.
Increase the temperature of the sample.
Soak a new or dry electrode for a minimum
of 10 hours in the process sample, then
calibrate the electrode.
