WARNING: This product is intended for use by dental professionals only. Before operating
handpiece, carefully read and follow these instructions and save them for future reference.
Observe all cautions and warnings, including:
• Handpieces should be heat-sterilized between patients to prevent cross-contamination which
could result in serious illness or even death from infectious organisms such as HIV (the virus
that causes AIDS) or hepatitis B.
• It is the responsibility of the Dental Healthcare Professional to determine the appropriate use
of this product and to understand the health of each patient, the dental procedures being
undertaken and industry and governmental agency regulations, recommendations and
requirements for safe practice of dentistry.
Precautions
• Do not cut with the handpiece unless you are sure the bur is secure. Do not extend the bur
outward from the handpiece head. A loose or extended bur could eject from the head or break
and cause personal injury.
• Do not use this handpiece within the oral cavity when a soft tissue wound is present.
Air pressure may force septic materials into these tissues.
• Midwest turbines should not be rebuilt. Replacing bearings only could result in unexpected
failure and patient injury due to different wear factors of new vs. old components.
Adverse Reactions
None Known.
Installation
Checking Handpiece Hose
Make sure all tubings supplying the handpiece hose are properly connected within the dental unit.
Be sure the air and water are delivered to the handpiece as shown in the illustration below.
5-Hole Fiber Optic
Fiber Optic
or Bulb
Air Requirements
The handpiece delivers designed speed and torque when operated with clean, filtered, moisture-free air at the
recommended operating pressure of 30 p.s.i. (2.0 Atm.). Air pressure should be measured at the handpiece
end of the hose.
Water Supply Recommendations
It is highly recommended that all dental water supply systems conform to applicable CDC (Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention) and ADA (American Dental Association) standards, and that all recommendations be
followed in terms of flushing, chemical flushing and general infection control procedures.

Never operate the handpiece under the following conditions:
1. In the presence of a soft tissue wound.
2. With a bur extended out from handpiece head.
3. Under "no load" conditions for extended periods of time.
4. At air pressure exceeding 30 p.s.i. (2.0 Atm.).
To operate the handpiece: Simply depress the foot control on your dental unit. For water spray and chip air,
refer to dental unit instructions.
Use of the bur wrench is required to open and close the chuck when installing and removing burs.
Installing and Removing Burs: Tradition (REF 750045 / 750044)
Tradition handpieces accept regular friction grip (FG) burs and short shank (SS) burs.
To use bur wrench: Insert square pin of bur wrench through
the handpiece's head cap until it engages the square socket in
the chuck. Fit the two wrench pins into the matching slots in
the head cap. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to open the
chuck, clockwise to tighten.
To install a bur: Open chuck, insert bur all the way into the
chuck. Tighten chuck with bur wrench.
Make sure bur is secure before operating handpiece.
Always use bur wrench to tighten chuck.
To remove bur: Insert the bur wrench into the back of the handpiece head. Rotate the wrench 1/2 turn
counterclockwise, then remove bur.
Note: The water spray will adequately cover bur and diamond cutting instruments up to .906 inches
(23 mm) long.
