2.4 Medical and athletic information and advice

2.4.1 The importance and benefits of physical exercise

Sedentary living and bad eating habits
steadily debilitate our physical abilities and
lead to increased body weight. The role
played by exercise in preventing major
diseases has been known for some time, as
has the fact that sedentariness is a prime
cause of ill health - in fact it has been
recognized and labeled as an actual illness:
hypokinesia.
Exercising regularly and practicing the right
habits (a balanced diet, moderate alcohol
intake, no smoking) are essential to
achieving and maintaining physical and
mental well-being and preventing most of
the pathologies afflicting industrialized
society (cardiovascular diseases, obesity
and muscle and bone diseases).
The basic components of physical exercise
are:

cardiovascular (or aerobic) exercise,
-
strengthening or toning muscles,
-
stretching (see section 2.4.3);
any self-respecting program should include
all three components, in different proportions
depending on the goal you want to achieve.
